Description

With more than 130 readings and 24 pages of visual arguments, Conversations offers an extraordinary variety of authors, genres, voices, and viewpoints on important contemporary civic issues.

Touching on issues that affect students both as individuals and as citizens, the readings and visuals invite students to join important civic “conversations" through their own writing. For each issue addressed, Conversations offers not just one or two selections, but several–reminding students that no issue has just one or two sides, but usually involves a wide range of voices. Frequently, selections comment on and argue with other selections, demonstrating that writing is a social exchange, and that much writing is a response to what we read.   The images included in this new edition also remind students that we regularly “read”–interpret and respond to–not only words, but visual arguments found in photographs, artworks, cartoons, advertisements, and websites.

Features

  • Organized around focused issues of public and private concern –such as the fate of public education, ownership of the media, pornography’s effect on gender relations, challenges to the traditional notions of a family, the role of government in regulating everything from guns to fast food, and the effect of social class on crime and punishment.
  • Represents writing as social exchange, with many selections that talk to each other about an issue and so motivate students to participate through their own writing.
  • Focuses on “visual conversations” as part of that social exchange–providing students with images that speak to one another in our visual culture and helping them to think more about the ways that images make arguments, respond to one another, and influence opinions.
  • Encompasses many genres in addition to the essay: fiction, poetry, drama, public oratory, interviews, congressional hearings and reports, cartoons, advertisements, photos, Internet screen shots, journal entries, and even a resolution by the American Library Association on the USA Patriot Act.
  • Provides a detailed introduction on motives for writing, writing as a social act, reading for content, reading critically, and how to “read” a visual text.
  • Includes a rhetorical table of contents, headnotes for the readings, and part introductions to the six parts of the book : education, media, gender, revolutions in marriage and family, civil liberties and civic responsibilities, and science and society.
  • Includes writings by public figures and citizens who are not professional writers, reminding students that writing is not only an occupation, but writing is itself an act of citizenship.
  • The Companion Website invites students into   verbal and visual conversations on contemporary civic issues while discussing ways of reading visual rhetoric.

New To This Edition

  • Carries the conversation into some of the most significant ongoing discussions in America today by introducing new sections on media issues and by focusing other sections on current debates surrounding: the crisis in public education, the digital divide, the recent explosion of issues related to civil unions and marriage for same-sex couples, stem cell research and other forms of genetic engineering, and the ever-growing list of areas subject to governmental regulation.
  • Six new “Visual Conversations” sections bring together images (photos, ads, cartoons, artworks, etc.) that speak to one another on specific civic questions, and invite students to consider not only those issues, but more generally, the ways in which images make arguments.
  • A new section on visual rhetoric has been added to the introduction , and the Companion Website has been expanded to include a wealth of resources on reading visual rhetoric.
  • Greater cohesion across sections of the book shows students the interconnectedness of many of the issues including: how social class affects issues of education, internet access, and issues of crime and punishment; how media issues affect civil rights and the ability of citizens to affect change, how civil rights issues regarding free speech materially affect attitudes towards women, the ownership of media outlets, and governmental regulation; how gun rights cut across race, gender, and class; and so on.
  • 80 new selections that carry on conversations from previous editions–and introduce new and exigent topics.
  • A new chapter on Media explores, on one hand, the centralization of media ownership and, on the other, the widening of outlets of conversation through alternative media on the Internet and in talk radio.   Students see issues that are very much from their own world, a world of weblogs, information overload, influential talk shows, and media outlets that are far from objective.
  • An increased focus on social class invites students to go beyond oversimplified notions of race, gender, education, and our criminal justice system and also to consider the ways that material conditions and economic factors influence the lives of many Americans.
