Description

The Promise of America encourages students to think critically and write analytically about the American experience, exploring the promises of freedom, opportunity, and equality that are dearest to our hearts.

This thematically-organized, cultural studies reader asks students to engage in a critical way our society’s deeply-held beliefs regarding social equality, education, free press, health care, work and success, and civil liberties.  Do we have certain birthrights as Americans as a result of promises made in our Declaration, Constitution, and other early sources?  How have these rights been amended or expanded over time, and to what degrees have these promises been kept for different groups?  Students will encounter a range of political and philosophical positions, historical depth and contemporary perspectives, and a variety of genres (speeches, newspaper editorials, photographs, cartoons, and expository essays) as they grapple with what it means to be an American.

Features

  • A deliberate yet engaging Introduction encourages students to think beyond “yes/ no” questions or “pro/ con” assessments to engage issues carefully and with an open mind.
  • More than 80 readings inquire into the rights that we believe we have as Americans while balancing conservative voices such as John McCain and Colin Powell with liberal voices such as Jimmy Carter and Cesar Chavez.  Significant historical sources from Sojourner Truth and FDR are balanced with contemporary perspectives that include Malcolm Gladwell, Eric Schlosser, and Barbara Ehrenreich.
  • After each reading, carefully crafted apparatus helps students to understand each writer's main ideas and his or her rhetorical choices while encouraging students to explore their own responeses to the readings:
    • Textual Questions help students learn to read deliberately for the most pertinent information.
    • Rhetorical Questions guide students through an understanding of rhetorical strategy, structure, and evidence.
    • Intertextual Questions ensure that students practice synthesizing sources, recognizing ongoing debates, and entering into this conversation.
    • Thinking Beyond the Text questions offer students the opportunity to explore the issue in directions beyond the reading’s borders.
    • For Writing and Discussion provides both informal and formal writing assignments.
  • Within each chapter, a Focal Point collects photographs and cartoons that argue a position and asks students to consider the multiple ways in which visual rhetoric is constructed and for what purpose.
