  • Maps, charts, and illustrations are woven into the narrative to provide students with visual references.

  • Exerpts from primary sources, including diaries, songs, and newspapers, are dispersed throughout the narrative to give students direct insight into the mindsets and experiences of Americans during the Civil War.

  • Enhanced and energized narrative. The second edition has been revised to make the text more concise, clarified, and contexualized, while still maintaining the captivating narrative.
  • Chapter 1 has been completely revised.  In this edition, the authors have refreshed the chronology, included richer analysis of slavery's beginnings, and expanded the coverage of the Second Great Awakening, reform movements, planters and the economy of slavery.
  • Selected maps have been revised and updated for improved clarity.
  • Increased and enhanced coverage of women's political roles, attitudes toward Western expansion, and deeper discussion of many battles, including Antietam, the Seven Days, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Chickamauga and Chattanooga, the Red River Campaign and Chambersburg.

This Terrible War, Second Edition
Michael Fellman, Lesley J. Gordon, and Daniel E. Sutherland

I find This Terrible War to have a superior mix of military, social, economic, and political coverage. Indeed, the book is so well written and organized that I no longer believe that I have to cover a bit of everything in my lectures. The text can introduce students to aspects of the war without my having to worry that its coverage is incomplete. --John Fowler, Kennesaw State University

Absorbing and accessible, This Terrible War examines the American Civil War and its aftermath by exploring the central themes and events of the period and challenging many traditional views about the war that nearly tore the country in two. Beyond the battlefield, the authors devote attention to the home front, social issues, and economics from antebellum times to Reconstruction, with a wide range of personal stories —from Generals to common soldiers.
