• Built upon an underpinning of learning theory, Effective College Learning teaches the importance of understanding how we learn and why. Effective learning requires more than just studying; rather, it is a holistic, pragmatic approach, one that enables students to become active participants in their own learning, both in the classroom and beyond.
• A unique Determining the Task approach to college learning gives students practical advice on interacting with professors, pinpointing specific tasks they need to accomplish, determining the level of thinking required for each assignment, time management, and taking effective lecture notes.
• Ample self assessment opportunities run throughout the text. Every chapter opens with a self-assessment (similar to a personal inventory test). Although every self assessment is slightly different in its approach, each presents students with either an objective list to fill in or task to complete, prompting them to record, evaluate, and reflect upon their own experiences, before beginning the lesson at hand. The purpose of this feature is simple: When students know where they are coming from, it’s easier for them to learn where they are headed.
• Multiple-chapter coverage of reading strategies and techniques prepares students for the intake and synthesis of information from textbooks and other academic sources.
• The "Research Into Practice" feature explores various studies conducted in relation to learning theory, and makes relevant connections to student life—such as adjusting to college, improving memory, avoiding procrastination, developing reading comprehension, and building on past learning and experiences.  
• The "Beyond the Classroom" feature caters to returning students, adult learners, working students, students starting families—and other so-called “nontraditional” students. Here students learn how to use what they have already learned—from “beyond the classroom”— to advance their own academic lives (e.g., by making the most of their time while on campus, by juggling responsibilities effectively, by drawing upon real-life strengths, etc.).
• Numerous "Study Tips" found throughout the chapters help students to remember the basics, taking with them the essential knowledge they will need to study successfully. 
• Using technology (computers, CD-ROMs, and the Internet) effectively in their college lives to further explore the learning process.
• "Success at a Glance" boxes depict key information in a visual way to help students remember the important information of each chapter.
• "Add to Your Portfolio" exercises allows students to apply each strategy presented in the book. By creating a portfolio over an entire term, students will have tangible evidence of the progress they have made in their thinking, learning, and studying.
• The reality of students’ lives is reflected in "Real College Scenarios" where each scenario features a college student who has a problem related in some way to the chapter’s topic. By helping these students solve their problems, students will be able to apply the ideas and strategies to develop their own learning process.
• "Word Wise" is a list of three or four challenging words presented in each chapter, including definitions and part of speech. This end-of-chapter feature reminds students that improving vocabulary is an on-going process.
