With an emphasis on elections and their importance in our political system, Morris Fiorina and Paul Peterson's groundbreaking text offers a stimulating, analytical approach to American government that engages students as it gives them a unique understanding of their political system as it exists and functions today.

The accessibility of instant public opinion polls, the growing influence of Internet, the ubiquitous nature of the news media, and the increasingly important role of interest groups—all of which Fiorina and Peterson use to demonstrate that America is moving toward a more popular democracy—have blurred the lines between campaigning and governing. Politicians today are constantly engaged in the campaign process—a “permanent campaign”—this has profoundly affected how our government functions today. The fifth edition of this presitgious text has been brought completely up-to-date through the second George W. Bush administration and 2006 midterm elections, includes  engaging debate-style readings throughout, and is now also available in a unique “Sandbox” format that allows instructors to seamlessly blend text chapters with policy material and/or selections from the “Great Questions in Politics” series.

  • Famous, highly-respected author, Morris Fiorina, continues to helm this book.  His acclaim, exposure, and influence have expanded even further with the success of his other Longman text – and media darling -  Culture War? The Myth of a Polarized America.  His name helps to make this book one of the most prestigious American government books available.
  • Elegant, two-color design underscores the prestige of the title, avoids clutter or “pandering” to students, and offers a look and feel that is appealing to faculty who know and admire Fiorina and Peterson’s work.
  • “Making the Connection” introduces the subject matter with an opening vignette dealing with high-interest issues. Following each vignette is a list of questions and topics covered in the chapter to prepare the reader for its contents.
  • “Democratic Dilemma” boxes ask students to think through dilemmas in the U.S political system, to weigh the pros and cons of structures and processes in American government. These are a critical thinking feature like the “Voices of the Permanent Campaign” boxes (see “New to this Edition”), except “Democratic Dilemmas” are more theoretical in nature and the “Voices” features are centered on hot current issues.
  • “International Comparison” boxes compare a feature of American Government to a similar features in other countries, giving students a better understanding of the strengths and limitations of the U.S. system.

  • New!  Sandbox Edition.  The Sandbox Edition is a one-color version of the text in which faculty can pick and choose chapters of Fiorina’s  text seamlessly integrated with policy chapters and/or material from any of the titles in the “Great Questions in Politics” Series.  Each title in the “Great Questions” series: (1) offers a theoretical foundation or perspective that is very similar to, or sympathetic with, the themes in The New American Democracy; (2) covers a topic of keen interest to American government faculty and students; (3) is written by an author with some measure of Fiorina’s stature.  The Sandbox Edition may include chapters from Fiorina’s text and any/all of the following:
    • A chapter on Domestic Policy (written by Fiorina et al)
    • A chapter on Economic Policy (written by Fiorina et al)
    • A chapter on Foreign and Defense Policy (written by Fiorina et al)
    • Any chapters from Culture War? The Myth of a Polarized America (separate book by Fiorina)
    • Any chapters from A Divider, Not a Uniter: George W. Bush and the American People (book by Gary Jacobson)
    • Any chapters from Governing by Campaigning: The Politics of the Bush
    • Presidency (book by George Edwards)
    • Any chapters from Is Voting for Young People? (book by Marty Wattenberg)
    • Any chapters from Seven Sins of American Foreign Policy (book by Loch Johnson)
    • Any chapters from Political Travels: Places, Connections and Authenticity (book By Dick Fenno)
  • Expanded!  Voices of the Permanent Campaign.  These popular sections now appear ten times throughout the book and constitute a “debate style reader built into the text for free.”  Each “Voice” utilizes real data, supplies ample charts and graphs, and focuses on key political issues:  immigration; pork spending; negative advertising; campaign finance and primary reform; death penalty; homeland security; U.S. policy toward Arab-Israeli conflict; school vouchers; and, of course, the culture war (including but not limited to gay marriage).
  • New Author!  William Mayer, an associate professor at Northeastern University, has replaced D. Stephen Voss.  Mayer is a Harvard Ph.D. and was the graduate student of both Fiorina and Peterson.  He has several well-received books to his credit and his research focuses on public opinion and media and politics.
  • Expanded!  Several important topics have increased coverage in this edition: the relationship between the president and Congress, campaign finance reform (see above regarding a “Voices” feature), religious freedom, globalization.
  • Updated throughout to include results of 2006 Midterm Elections and coverage of key political events and issues of the last two years.
  • New! Technology Advantage — MyPoliSciLab.  MyPoliSciLab is a state of the art, interactive and instructive online solution for your course offered within a course management system. Available as a website alone or in one of three course management systems --  CourseCompass, Blackboard, or WebCT --  MyPoliSciLab offers students over 100 revised and updated simulations and other interactive exercises (i.e., visual literacy exercises, interactive timelines, comparative exercises, participation activities), as well assessment tools—all integrated with the on-line e-book. For each chapter of the text, students will navigate through a pre-test, post-test, chapter review, and a full chapter exam, all linked to the on-line e-book, so they can assess, review, and improve their understanding of the concepts within the chapters.   New features of MyPoliScilab include a wealth of roundtable and debate-style videos covering key issues or hot topics in the course (more than 50 videos can be found now , and more are continually added throughout the year), PoliSci News Review (updated weekly), and weekly polls.  Access to the site is offered at no additional charge when packaged with this text.
