Human Biology: Concepts and Current Issues, Fourth Edition sparks interest among non-science students by encouraging them to connect basic biology concepts to real-world issues that are relevant to their own lives. As an award winning teacher, author Michael Johnson demystifies the scientific process and the concepts of human biology using a narrative style to tell a story with a student-friendly approach. Liposuction, antioxidants, and the black market for bones are just a few of the timely topics that are woven throughout each chapter to engage students in learning the basics of human biology. Michael Johnson’s jargon-free writing style and expanded coverage of current issues are supported by dozens of exciting new illustrations and photos that further engage student interest, while unique “Try It Yourself” boxes and the accompanying InterActive Physiology® for Human Biology CD-ROM promote active learning.

Human Biology’s expanded supplements package features InterActive Physiology® for Human Biology, which provides a wealth of outstanding animations, activities, and self-testing that can be used in lectures or as a study tool outside of the classroom. Supplements include the new Instructor Media Manager package that organizes all instructor media resources into one convenient, chapter-by-chapter resource.

  • Current Issue boxes, now included in every chapter, draw students into the material by connecting human biology to real-world issues such as antioxidants, liposuction, and the black market in bones and human tissue. Each essay provides contrasting views on controversial topics, along with a summary of “The Facts” that help students become better consumers of commonly-reported health and science information.
  • Try It Yourself boxes engage students in active learning with short exercises that can be performed in minutes to validate facts found in the text.
  • Health Watch boxes provide insights and practical advice on health topics and include new discussions on topics such as carbon monoxide poisoning and Viagra abuse.
  • Directions in Science boxes highlight the process of science with new coverage of lessons learned and the discovery of the new taste: umami.
  • Time-saving pedagogy includes Declarative "concept-style" headings that help students preview and review chapter concepts, and brief “Recap” paragraphs that summarize the take-home lessons for each chapter concept.
  • Clear, visually appealing illustrations developed expressly for the human biology course are self-contained and carefully crafted for visual learners.
  • Thorough end-of-chapter review tools include Chapter Summaries, Test Yourself questions, Concept Review critical thinking questions, Apply What You Know questions, and Internet Resources.
  • The text's CD-ROM, InterActive Physiology® for Human Biology, significantly enriches the teaching environment by providing a wealth of outstanding animations, activities, self-testing, and additional resources. A new module on the Digestive System has been added for this edition, along with assignable worksheets that can be assigned or used as study aids. InterActive Physiology® for Human Biology is included with each new copy of the text.
  • The Human Biology Place Website includes additional interactive concept review and self-testing activities, chapter overviews and objectives, news articles through eThemes of the Times, a glossary with pronunciation guide, and Web activities based on the Current Issue boxes. Instructor Resources on the Human Biology Place include links to files for the Instructor’s Guide and Test Bank.

  • 15 new Current Issue essays have been added throughout the text, and discuss high-interest topics such as weight reduction surgeries and the risks and benefits of medically-induced coma. These visually-appealing, one- or two-page spreads now appear in every chapter to provide the most thorough coverage of “current issues” for the non-majors human biology course.
  • Instructor Media Manager CD-ROMs organize all instructor media resources into one convenient, chapter-by-chapter resource package. The Media Manager includes an image library of all the art and tables and selected photos from the book with customizable labels, stepped-out art, editable PowerPoint® lecture presentation slides, clicker questions, animations, new ABC News video clip lecture launchers, and more. Instructors can search through the material and create a shopping cart of selected assets that can be easily downloaded onto their computers.
  • New ABC News videos include 15 current videos from ABC programs on current topics relevant to human biology. Each is on average 3-7 minutes in length and provides an engaging way for instructors to start lectures. The CD-ROM is included in the Media Manager package as a separate item, and is also integrated into the PowerPoint® lectures.
  • Dozens of new illustrations and photos “hook” students into reading the chapter material, and include entirely new illustrations of levels of biological organization, cardiac muscle cells, phagocytosis, and more.
  • A complete update of the text includes new and revised Try It Yourself, Current Issues, Directions in Science and Health Watch boxes. High-interest content updates include new information on diabetes, bird flu, trans fat, liposuction, gender selection, bacterial resistance to antibiotics, and more.
  • New magazine-style design makes the text student-friendly, fun and engaging.
  • Expanded InterActive Physiology® for Human Biology CD-ROM features a new Digestive System module and new worksheets for each tutorial in the program that help instructors assign the activities to students.
  • New InterActive Physiology® for Human Biology worksheets are included on the InterActive Physiology®for Human Biology CD-ROM and available for instructors to assign to students or for student use as study aids.
