Elementary Algebra is a book for the student. The authors' goal is to help build students' confidence, their understanding and appreciation of math, and their basic skills by presenting an extremely user-friendly text that models a framework in which students can succeed. Unfortunately, students who place into developmental math courses often struggle with math anxiety due to bad experiences in past math courses. Developmental students often have never developed nor applied a study system in mathematics. To address these needs, the authors have framed three goals for Elementary Algebra: 1) reduce math anxiety, 2) teach for understanding, and 3) foster critical thinking and enthusiasm.

The authors' writing style is extremely student-friendly. They talk to students in their own language and walk them through the concepts, explaining not only how to do the math, but also why it works and where it comes from, rather than using the “monkey-see, monkey-do” approach that some books take.

This product accompanies:
Carson & Jordan,  Elementary Algebra, 2/E

  • Study System A study system presented in the TO THE STUDENT section in the front of the text is reinforced as students progress through the book through the use of color-coding for taking notes and learning strategy boxes. The color codes are consistent in the text itself: red for definitions, blue for procedures, rules, and things to remember, and black for notes and examples.
  • Learning Styles A learning styles inventory is presented at the very beginning of the text to help students assess their particular style of learning. Throughout the text, students will see Learning Strategy boxes that serve as reminders that tactile, visual, and auditory learners all learn and retain material in different ways, so they should make every effort to utilize a variety of methods until they grasp the concept at hand.
  • Learning Strategies Learning Strategy boxes appear where appropriate in the text to offer advice on how to effectively use the study system and how to study specific topics based on the student's individual learning style.
  • Algebra Pyramid An Algebra Pyramid is used throughout the text to help students see how the topic they are working on relates within the big picture of algebra—particularly focusing on how constants and variables relate to expressions and equations. This is an over-arching concept that is rarely touched on in other books.
  • Chapter Openers Like the Algebra Pyramid, the openers are designed to help students see how the topics in the upcoming chapter relate to the big picture of the entire course. These are more detailed than the algebra pyramid and give specific information about the importance of the topics in the chapter and how they fit into the overall structure of the course.
  • Connections Connection boxes are designed to help students connect prior learning to what they are learning now, and/or help them see how what they are learning now will help them with a future topic.
  • Your Turn Practice Exercises Your Turn practice exercises, after most examples, give students an interactive learning environment and to prepare them for the exercise sets that lie ahead. Answers are provided so students can assess their progress immediately.
  • Annotated Instructor's Edition The Annotated Instructor's Edition provides an abundance of helpful information for instructors in the form of just-in-time teaching tips and answers to exercises right next to the corresponding exercise where possible. Challenge exercises are indicated only in the AIE so instructors can assign homework accordingly without causing anxiety for the students.
  • Problem Solving Process A 5-step problem solving process is introduced near the beginning of the text. The steps are understand, plan, execute, answer, and check. Every application example throughout the rest of the text follows the steps given in this outline in order to model the problem-solving process clearly.
  • Warning Boxes Warning boxes alert students to common mistakes and assumptions that students often make and explain why these are incorrect.
  • Of Interest Of Interest boxes are scattered throughout the text to offer a unique flavor to what some students might consider ho-hum mathematics. Sometimes containing trivia and other times historical notes, Of Interest boxes are designed to enhance the learning process by making concepts fun and interesting.
  • Puzzle Problems These mathematical brainteasers appear at the end of selected exercise sets to encourage creative and critical thinking. These problems often have no “formula” approach to their solution.
  • Collaborative Exercises One to two collaborative exercises appear per chapter. These exercises encourage students to work in groups and use the topics in a particular section or sections to solve a problem that may or may not have correct answers. These exercises are designed to encourage classroom discussion.
  • Calculator Tips The relevant functions of calculators (scientific or graphing, depending on the topic) are explained and illustrated throughout the text in Calculator Tips. In addition, an occasional calculator icon in the exercise sets indicates that the problem is appropriate to be solved using a calculator, but it does not mean that a calculator is required to solve that problem.
  • Review Exercises Continuous review is important in any mathematics course. Carson/Gillespie/Jordan includes review exercises at the end of each exercise set. These exercises review previously learned concepts not only to keep the material fresh for students, but also to serve as a foundational review for the discussion in the next section.
  • End of chapter A summary at the end of each chapter provides: defined key terms, a two-column summary of key procedures/rules/examples, review exercises of varying types, a practice test, and a cumulative review.

    Brief Description

Tom Carson- Tom Carsons first teaching experience was teaching guitar while an undergraduate student studying electrical engineering. That experience helped him to realize that his true gift and passion was, and is, in teaching. He went on to earn his M.A.T. in mathematics at the University of South Carolina. For the last ten years, he has been teaching at Midlands Technical College in the Developmental Mathematics Program, where he has been honored with a NISOD Excellence in Teaching award and a Whos Who among American Teachers award. Tom has served on the faculty council and has been a board member of the South Carolina Association of Developmental Educators (SCADE). Ever the teacher, Tom teaches outside the classroom by presenting at conferences such as NADE, AMATYC, and ICTCM on topics such as Combating Innumeracy, Writing in Mathematics, and Implementing a Study System.

Ellyn GillespieAfter several career changes, Ellyn Gillespie found her calling. While working in a campus bookstore, she was hired to teach a developmental math class and immediately knew that teaching was what she had been looking for. After completing her M. A. T. in mathematics at The Citadel, she went on to teach at several colleges throughout SC. For the past 6 years, she has been at Midlands Technical College, teaching in both the Developmental Studies and Mathematics departments. Honored three times as a Whos Who Among Americas Teachers, Ellyn continues to show her enthusiasm in and out of the classroom. She serves on the colleges Internet and Technology Committee and works to introduce technology in the classroom. Also a member of the states Developmental Studies Mathematics Peer Group, she works to improve mathematics instruction throughout the state. Ellyn continues to share her knowledge with others and has presented at NADE and NCTM conferences.
