This best-selling text balances solid mathematical coverage with a comprehensive overview of mathematical concepts as they relate to varied disciplines. This text provides an appreciation of mathematics, highlighting mathematical history, and applications of math to the arts and sciences. It is an ideal book for students who require a general overview of mathematics, especially those majoring in liberal arts, the social sciences, business, nursing and allied health fields. A Survey of Mathematics with Applications is now available in an expanded edition with extra chapters on graph theory (Chapter 14) and voting and apportionment (Chapter 15).

Problem Solving Beginning in Chapter 1, students are introduced to problem-solving and critical thinking. The theme of problem-solving is then continued throughout the text, and special problem-solving exercises are presented in the exercise sets.

Critical Thinking Skills In addition to a focus on problem-solving, the book also features sections on Inductive Reasoning and the important skills of Estimation and Dimensional Analysis.

Profiles in Mathematics Brief historical sketches and vignettes present the stories of people who have advanced the discipline of mathematics.

Did You Know ... These colorful, engaging and lively boxed features highlight the connection of mathematics to history, to the arts and sciences, to technology, and to a broad variety of disciplines.

Chapter Summaries, Review Exercises, and Chapter Tests This end-of-chapter material helps students to review and to prepare for tests.

Group Projects At the end of each chapter are suggested projects that can be used to have students work together. These projects can also be assigned to individual students if desired.

Recreational Mathematics exercises have been added in many sections to help make the book more enjoyable to students. The Recreational Mathematics exercises take a variety of forms, from puzzles to exploring new mathematical ideas and concepts.

Timely Tips have been added throughout the book to assist students in understanding the material better. This information often helps students to comprehend the concepts, or relates the material to other sections of the book.

A new feature, Mathematics Everywhere , stresses the importance of mathematics in our everyday lives. This material will help students to see a need for and gain an appreciation of mathematics.
