Statistics

The Vision:

•  All uses of statistics start with careful thought about what we want to know and end with a clear account of what we have learned. Intro Stats shows students how to do statistics. But unlike other texts, this book views statistics through the frame of thinking about the context of the problem and telling what has been found.

• Where other texts teach how to calculate a particular statistic or test and highlight definitions and formulas, Intro Stats teaches why, and when, what to check, the process of statistical analysis, and how to report the results. Students come away knowing how to think statistically.
• Intro Stats covers the material typically covered in an introductory statistics course, with chapters on multiple regression and ANOVA included on a CD for those who can go a bit further.

• The book uses a minimum of math and carefully planned development paths.
• By leading with practical data analysis and graphics, the book gets students “doing statistics” quickly and “thinking statistically” from the start. Students understand what we find in data, why we find that interesting, and how we report it to others as a sound foundation for the challenges of inference.
• Each chapter includes a What Can Go Wrong? section that illustrates the most common misuses and misconceptions of statistical thinking.
• By Hand boxes help the student through the calculation of a worked example. Intro Stats encourages the use of technology to calculate statistical quantities, but it also recognizes the pedagogical benefits of occasionally doing a calculation by hand.  
• Each chapter ends with a summary review, including What We Have Learned,key Concepts, and essential Skills to help students review and check their own understanding, as well as a Connections section that ties the current material into that of other chapters.
• The text shows how to do statistics with technology in Computer sections and includes exercises with computer output for students to interpret.
• CD-ROM, packaged free with a new text to qualified adopters. The CD-ROM is bound in new copies of the book. It contains a full version of ActivStats, which is a complete multimedia presentation that follows the Intro Stats table of contents, and Data Desk, a full-function statistics package. Also on the CD are Chapters 28 (Analysis of Variance) and 29 (Multiple Regression); DDXL, an Excel add-in; and data sets formatted for Minitab, Excel, JMP, SPSS and the TI graphing calculator, as well as text files.

• Each chapter includes one or two Just Checking sections, which allow students to check their understanding of the concepts as they read each chapter. These questions are designed to be a quick check and most involve very little calculation. The answers are the end of each chapter so students can easily check themselves.
• Exercise sets have been expanded and graded by difficulty.
• What Have We Learned?  sections at the end of each chapter highlight new concepts, define the new terms introduced in the chapter and list the skills that the student should have acquired. If the students understand the concepts, know the terms and have the skills, they're probably ready for the exam.  
• The streamlined and clarified text retains the full flavor and readability of the first edition.
• ActivStats Pointers highlight activities in ActivStats that parallel the discussions in the book.
• The Instructor's Edition contains answers to all exercises as well as a chapter-by-chapter Intructor's Resource Guide, which includes extra examples, teaching suggestions, and an overview of the chapter.
