This item has been upgraded to Precalculus: Graphs & Models and Graphing Calculator Manual Package, 4/E.

With a visual, graphical approach that emphasizes connections among concepts, this text helps students make the most of their study time. The authors show how different mathematical ideas are tied together through their zeros, solutions, and x-intercepts theme; side-by-side algebraic and graphical solutions; calculator screens; and examples and exercises. By continually reinforcing the connections among various mathematical concepts as well as different solution methods, the authors lead students to the ultimate goal of mastery and success in class.

  • Zeros, Solutions, and x-Intercepts Theme – This theme allows students to reach a new level of mathematical comprehension through understanding the connections among all three concepts.
  • Algebraic and Visual Side-by-Sides – Examples are worked out both algebraically and visually to increase student understanding of the concepts. Additionally, seeing these side-by-sides helps students make the connection between the algebraic manipulation and the graphical interpretation.
  • Connecting the Concepts – Comprehension is streamlined and retention is maximized when the student views a concept in a visual, rather than paragraph, form. Combining design and art, this feature highlights the importance of connecting concepts. Its visual aspect invites the student to stop and check that he or she has understood how the concepts of a section or several sections work together.
  • Review Icon – This provides the student with a reference to a related section. The student can then go to the related, previous section to review a concept being used in the current section.
  • Study Tips – These consist of occasional, brief reminders in the margins that promote effective study habits.

  • Visualizing the Graph: This new feature asks students to match an equation with its graph. This focus on visualization and conceptual understanding appears in every chapter to help students see “the big picture.”
  • Where appropriate, a Graphing Calculator Manual Icon will appear in the text, directing students to additional information in the manual about calculator usage. The Graphing Calculator Manual is bundled free with all copies of the main text.
  • 25% More Exercises: The authors have worked hard to add additional exercises where needed, often at the request of reviewers, on key topics throughout the text.
  • Vocabulary Review: Appearing once in every chapter, in the Skill Maintenance portion of an exercise set, this feature checks and reviews students’ understanding of the language of mathematics.
  • Classify the Function: With a focus on conceptual understanding, students are asked one time per chapter to identify a number of functions by their type (i. e., linear, quadratic, rational, and so forth). As students progress through the text, the variety of functions they know increases and these exercises become more challenging. These exercises appear with the review exercises in the Skill Maintenance portion of an exercise set.
  • Each chapter now concludes with a Chapter Test to thoroughly check students’ comprehension.
  • Annotated Instructor’s Edition: For the first time, this text is available with an AIE that includes the answers to the exercises on the page where they occur (whenever possible) as well as teaching tips throughout.

Content Changes:

  • Introduction to Graphing is now in section 1.1 and is combined with material from the previous section 1.7 (Distance, Midpoints, and Circles).
  • Old section 1.3 (Modeling: Data Analysis, Curve Fitting, and Linear Regression) and old section 2.5 (Modeling: Data Analysis, Curve Fitting, and Quadratic Regression) are now part of sections 1.4 (Equations of Lines and Modeling) and 2.3 (Quadratic Equations, Functions, and Models) respectively.
  • Old section 1.4 (More on Functions) is split into two sections: 1.5 (More on Functions) and 1.6 (The Algebra of Functions).
  • Old section 1.6 (Variation and Applications) has been moved to section 3.7.
  • Old section 4.1 (Composite Functions) is now included in section 1.6 (The Algebra of Functions).
  • There is a new section 3.2 (Graphing Polynomial Functions) for more coverage of hand-drawn graphs.
  • Old Appendix A (Descartes' Rule of Signs) is now part of of section 3.4 (Theorems about Zeros of Polynomial Functions).
  • A new section 8.6 covers Determinants and Cramer’s Rule, which was formerly in Appendix B.
  • Chapter 9 has two new sections: 9.5 (Rotation of Axes) and 9.6 (Polar Equations of Conics).
  • Old Appendix C (Parametric Equations) is now section 9.7.
  • A new Appendix A covers Basic Concepts from Geometry.
