Description

This edition of Mathematics with Applications continues to be an excellent learning tool for applied mathematics students. As always, the text includes the popular margin exercises as well as comprehensive review of algebraic topics, but with this revision comes the fresh insight of a new co-author. Also, at our customers' request, this textbook has additional calculus content, allowing the book to be all that you need and more.

Features

Balanced Approach Multiple representations of a topic (symbolic, numerical, graphical, verbal) are used as appropriate throughout the text.

Real-Data Examples and Applications have long been popular features of this text, and this edition is no exception. The data has been updated and added to throughout the text.

Examples allow students to see how different problems are solved using the techniques shown in the book. As in the real world, many of these problems have multi-step questions and solutions.

Margin Exercises, keyed to the discussion in the text, provide students with an opportunity to practice immediately after learning a new skill. These margin exercises essentially function as a complete, in-text study guide.

Cautions highlight common student difficulties or warn against frequently made mistakes.

Technology Tips appear within the text as appropriate to inform students of various features of their graphing calculators or spreadsheet programs and to guide them in using these tools.

Exercises at the end of each section provide students with a valuable opportunity to practice the material that they have just learned in the chapter. Many of these exercises are tied back into the text, making for a cohesive learning process. In addition to the traditional and application-based exercises, there are also some exercises that require writing, the use of the calculator, skills from earlier sections, or are tied to past CPA exams. Many of the application exercises include real data from cited sources.

End of Chapter materials include a summary of key terms and symbols and key concepts. Once students feel the understand these, they can complete the review exercises to confirm their comprehension of the material covered in the chapter.

Case Studies appear at the end of each chapter. These case studies are contemporary, real-world applications of some of the mathematics presented in the chapter, providing at least a partial answer to the question, "When will I ever use this?"

Pedagogical Use of Color makes this book's art program more effective in enhancing the mathematical exposition and clarifying many graphical presentations.

New To This Edition

  • Each chapter begins with a brief overview of applications of the mathematics treated in that chapter, together with references to appropriate exercises.
  • Approximately 30% of the exercises throughout the book are new or revised from the previous edition.
  • There has been a significant increase in real-data examples and exercises in Chapters 8, 9, and 10. In particular, many discussions of dice, cards, and marbles have been replaced by more relevant examples such as jury selection.
  • The coverage of limits in Chapter 11: Differential Calculus has been expanded with a new section on one-sided limits and limits at infinity.
  • A section on Lagrange multipliers has been added to Chapter 14: Multivariate Calculus.
  • In addition, many detailed changes have been made throughout the book to improve clarity and coverage.

Author Bios

Marge Lial has always been interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College.

Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

Thomas W. Hungerford received his bachelor’s degree from Holy Cross and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.  He taught for many years at the

University of Washington (Seattle) before moving to Cleveland State University in 1980.  He has been at Saint Louis University since 2003.  He has written a number of research articles in algebra and several in mathematics education.  Dr. Hungerford is the author or coauthor of more than a dozen mathematics textbooks, ranging from high school to graduate level, several of which are published by Addison-Wesley.  He is active in promoting the effective use of technology in mathematics instruction.  Dr. Hungerford has also been a referee and reviewer for various mathematical journals and has served on National Science Foundation panels for selecting grant recipients.

John P. Holcomb, Jr.  received his bachelor's degree from St. Bonaventure University and his Ph.D. from the University at Albany, State University of New York.  He taught for five years at Youngstown State University prior to arriving at Cleveland State University in Fall 2000.  He is an associate professor and frequently collaborates with researchers in a variety of disciplines where he provides statistical analysis.  Dr. Holcomb has also authored several papers in statistical education and is very active in the American Statistical Association and the Mathematical Association of America.  He was named a Carnegie Scholar in 2000 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and in 2003 received the Waller Award from the American Statistical Association for outstanding teaching of introductory statistics.
