This edition provides numerous strategies for success for both students and instructors. Instructors will find the book easier to use with such additions as an Annotated Instructor's Edition, instructor notes within the exercise sets, and an Insider's Guide. Students will find success through features including highlights, exercise hints, art annotations, critical thinking exercises, and pop quizzes, as well as procedures, strategies, and summaries.

  • Chapter Opener Each chapter begins with the discussion of a real-world situation that uses mathematics from the chapter.  Examples and exercises that relate back to the opener are included in the chapter.
  • Graphing Calculator Discussions Optional graphing calculator discussions have been included in the text.  They are clearly marked by graphing calculator icons so that they can be easily skipped if desired.  Students who do not use a graphing calculator can still benefit from the technology discussions, as well as from the calculator generated graphs occurring in the text.  The graphing calculator is used as a tool to support and enhance algebraic conclusions, not to make conclusions.
  •  For Thought Each exercise set is preceded by a set of ten true/false questions that review the basic concepts in the section, help check student understanding before beginning the exercises, and offer opportunities for writing and/or discussion.  The answers to all For Thought exercises are included in the back of the student edition.
  • Writing/Discussion and Cooperative Learning Exercises These exercises deepen students’ understanding by giving them the opportunity to express mathematical ideas both in writing and to their classmates during small group or team discussions.
  • Linking Concepts Located at the end of nearly every exercise set, these multi-part exercises and explorations can be used for individual or group work.  The idea of this feature is to use concepts from the current section along with concepts from preceding sections (or chapters) to solve problems that illustrate the links among various concepts.  Some parts of these questions are open-ended and require more thought than standard skill-building exercises.  Answers are given in the Instructor’s Edition only, and full solutions can be found in the Instructor’s Solutions Manual.
  • Chapter Review Exercises These exercises are designed to give students a comprehensive review of the chapter without reference to individual sections and prepare students for the chapter test.
  • Chapter Test The problems in the Chapter Test measure students' readiness for a typical one-hour classroom test.  Instructors may also use them as a model for their own end-of-chapter tests.  Students should be aware that their in-class test could vary from the Chapter Test due to different emphasis placed on the topics by individual instructors.
  • Tying It All Together Found at the end of most chapters, these exercises help students review selected concepts from the present and prior chapters, and require students to integrate multiple concepts and skills.
  • Index of Applications The many applications contained within the text are listed in the Index of Applications.  The applications are page referenced and grouped by subject matter.

*See the New to This Edition segment for information on new or enhanced features, in addition to those listed above.

Content Changes for the Fourth Edition

For this fourth edition of Precalculus, there are extensively updated explanations, examples, exercises, and art in response to comments from the users of the third edition.   Over 1000 additional exercises have been added to this edition, and many of the existing exercises have been improved, updated, and reorganized, providing students with a smoother path to success. Using a pedagogical approach to color, more color has been added to key examples to emphasize certain computations. The art package has been revamped with new photographs and situational art that compliments the fresh new design and will help students better visualize the mathematics being discussed.  The section on complex numbers has been moved to Chapter P (Prerequisites) so that Chapter 3 (Polynomial and Rational Functions) would contain fewer sections and be easier to teach. Section 3.1 now has more review of polynomial functions and quadratic functions before diving into the examples. Section 8.1 includes more on larger systems of linear equations and there are now ‘just-in-time’ reviews on inverse functions in Section 8.2.

New and Enhanced Features

We have included several new features and revised some existing features.  These improvements are designed to make the book easier to use and to support student and instructor success.  Students and instructors will welcome the following new and enhanced features:

    For students:

  • Try This After every example in the text there is an exercise that is very similar to the example.  These problems give students the opportunity to immediately try a problem that is just like the example and check their work. Solutions to all Try This problems are contained in the appendix of the student edition.
  • Function Galleries Occurring throughout the text, these summaries have been improved with a new design and are now also gathered together at the beginning of the text.  These graphical galleries are designed to help the students link the visual aspects of various families of functions to the properties of the functions.
  • Pop Quizzes   Included in every section of the text, the Pop Quizzes give instructors convenient 8- to 10-question quizzes that can be used in the classroom.  They are short and cover just the basic facts.  The answers appear in the Annotated Instructor’s Edition only.
  • Hints Given for approximately five selected application problems in each exercise set, Hints suggest ways of approaching a problem and give a starting point to solve the application problem. Problems with Hints are easily identified within the text.
  • Highlights This end-of-chapter feature has been completely rewritten with the student in mind.  Each highlight contains an overview of all of the concepts presented in the chapter along with brief examples to illustrate the concept.
  • Thinking Outside the Box   Found throughout the text, these problems are designed to get students (and instructors) to do some mathematics just for fun.  The problems can be used for individual or group work.  They may or may not relate to the sections in which they are located and might not even require any techniques discussed in this text.  Students can be creative while working on these problems and try Thinking Outside the Box.  The answers are given in the instructor’s edition only and complete solutions can be found in the Instructor’s Solutions Manual.
  • Art Annotations have been added in order to make the mathematical art a better learning tool and easier for students to use.
  • Summaries of important concepts are included to help students clarify ideas that have multiple parts.
  • Strategies contain general guidelines for accomplishing tasks.  They have been given a more visible design so that students will be more aware of them and use them to sharpen their problem-solving skills.
  • Procedures are similar to Strategies, but are more specific and more algorithmic.  They have also been highlighted in this edition and are designed to give students a step-by-step approach.

     For instructors:

  • Annotated Instructor’s Edition New to this edition, this text is available with answers included on the page beside the exercises for most exercises, plus a complete answer section at the back.
  • Example Numbers   Occurring at the end of the direction line for nearly all groups of exercises, the Example Numbers indicate which examples correspond to the exercises.  This keying of exercises to examples appears only in the Annotated Instructor’s Edition and will make it easier for instructors to assign homework problems.
  • Insider’s Guide This new supplement includes resources to help faculty with course preparation and classroom management. Included are helpful teaching tips correlated to each section of the text as well as additional resources for classroom enrichment.
