By encouraging skill building and concept application, Access 2007 Guidebook, Sixth Edition, provides basic database principles students need to use Access 2007 effectively in real-world situations. Trigg and Dobson’s thoughtful, hands-on approach combines clearly written instructions, good reference materials, challenging exercises, and extensive practice opportunities to reach beyond simplistic “point and click” manuals. These practical tools ensure that students will become designers, developers, and informed users of simple Access databases today and throughout their careers. The Sixth Edition is ideal for a non-technical audience in introductory database and Access courses.

Four preview chapters are available on the Companion Website until the end of September.

  • Uses hands-on tutorials to encourage practice:
    • Test Yourself features ask students to answer questions as they read or practice, and can be used as a chapter review.
    • Exercises offer hands-on opportunities to practice. Exercises range from simple rehearsals of procedures to group activities to in-depth explorations of previously learned skills to discussion questions. Answers to the first exercise in each chapter are included in Appendix A.
    • Developer’s Tips provide additional information about concepts, design ideas, maintenance suggestions, and potential problems as generated by working professionals.
    • Case Studies at the end of each chapter use skills learned in a chapter to complete another step in the development of a business application. Hints are included to help solve more complex problems.
  • Includes useful reference material:
    • Objectives at the beginning of each chapter outline what will be learned. Objectives are repeated at the end of the chapter to review new knowledge and skills.
    • A list of all Access built-in functions for descriptions and syntax, along with usage examples, are included in Appendix B.
    • Question and Answer hints demonstrate common mistakes to avoid or troubleshoot problems encountered while completing the exercises.
    • Fast Track, a set of step-by-step end-of-chapter procedures, allows readers to look up procedures while working on the exercises or after class is finished.

  • The new features of Access 2007 are integrated:
    • A new Getting Started screen includes a variety of template databases to ease novices into the program and database creation and maintenance.
    • A new interface makes working in Access 2007 simpler for beginners with tabbed windows, a status bar, scroll bars, and a new Navigation Pane that provides a comprehensive view of tables, forms, queries, and reports.
  • A new business scenario—managing a business that sells goods on an online auction site—is used as the example database throughout the book to demonstrate new material.
  • Other databases in examples and exercises are updated to include more business databases and more records in each database.
  • Additional examples illustrating how to develop database tables are added to Chapter 1.
  • Additional examples demonstrating how to normalize database tables are added to Chapter 7.
  • A set of review questions is added to the end of each chapter.
  • A new Exercise #1 in every chapter reviews concepts and commands using a database that tracks inventory for a music store.
  • The three case studies are updated. Case studies A, B, and C retain increasing levels of complexity, but B and C are somewhat simplified.
  • Ninety-five percent of the screen shots showing updated windows, commands, and operations are new.
  • Graphic elements are redesigned for easier reference.
  • The test bank and chapter presentations are completely updated.
