The newly revised Sixth Edition of Elements of Ecology maintains its engaging, reader-friendly style as it explains the basic principles of ecology. The text is updated to include new chapters on current ecological topics (metapopulations and conservation ecology); new part introductions to connect the subfields of ecology; and new in-text features to encourage students to interpret the ecological data, research, and models used throughout the text. Abundant, accessible examples illustrate and clarify the text's emphasis on understanding ecological patterns within an evolutionary framework. Additionally, the text employs new study questions requiring students to make connections and apply their knowledge.

Each chapter includes at least one Quantifying Ecology box explaining equations and statistical techniques with step-by-step examples designed to teach students how to use and interpret data. The expanded companion website (www.ecologyplace.com) includes GRAPHit!, MODELit!, and QUANTIFYit!, new quantitative exercises to help students further master and apply math skills.

New Researcher Profiles will introduce students to primary literature by featuring the next generation of ecologists working on innovative research.  These in-depth case studies follow a series of experiments that serve to illuminate the text’s core concepts.

  • Researcher Profiles describe experimental case-studies in detail.
  • Quantifying Ecology boxes clearly explain mathematical aspects of ecology and their relevance.
  • Ecological Issues boxes describe how humans influence the study of ecology.
  • Content synthesizing part introductions, chapter opening outlines, concept modules, summaries, study questions, further readings, and a glossary of more than 400 key terms all enhance student understanding and retention.
  • The student website is integrated with the text and includes the interactive quantitative tools GRAPHit!, MODELit!, and QUANTIFYit!, as well as animations, quiz questions, flashcards, news and weblinks, Ecological Perspectives essays, and more. A subscription to the website is included with each new copy of the text.

  • New Researcher Profiles feature young, up-and-coming scientists and case studies on their ecological fieldwork to introduce students to a progression of exciting new ecological research. Follow-up questions challenge students to interpret the results of the featured research.
  • Expansion of Quantifying Ecology boxes helps students develop the quantitative skills they need to interpret ecological data, research, and models. There is at least one Quantifying Ecology box per chapter, which fully explains either an equation or statistical technique through a step-by-step worked example. Skills are reinforced by set of follow-up questions and links to GRAPHit!, MODELit!, and QUANTIFYit! on the student website (www.ecologyplace.com).
  • New 2-page content synthesizing chapter introductions set a framework for the coming chapters and give students a “big picture” overview of the hierarchy of ecology and how various topics interrelate.
  • New Ecological Issues essays demonstrate how the text can be applied to issues of environmental and human significance. For example, in chapter two, the new short essay “The Ecology of Antibiotic Resistance” discusses how antibiotic resistance is a result of natural selection. Each essay is followed by a set of critical thinking questions.
  • Restructuring of the main text includes condensed coverage of biomes from six chapters down to three chapters. A new Part IX (Human Ecology) will be added to cover environmental issues in-depth toward the end of the course. In addition, the coverage of soils is reduced and coverage of ecosystem ecology is streamlined in Chapter 20. New Chapter 12, Metapopulations, focuses on a growing area of research interest.
  • Revised study questions include more critical thinking exercises that engage students to make connections and apply their knowledge.
  • Revised references from the back matter have been moved up to end-of-chapter material to emphasize how the text is based on real scientific studies. These Further Readings are annotated to explain their relevance to the student/instructor.
  • Revised art program includes 134 new color photos, 154 new illustrations and 15 revised illustrations.
  • Landscape Ecology chapter explores the role of disturbance in ecosystems.
  • Expanded coverage of plant and animal adaptations in chapters 6 and 7 reflects the book’s evolutionary theme.
