For mid-to-upper level courses in Gender Roles, Introduction to Women's Studies, and Sociology of Sex Roles.

The updated revision for the fourth edition of Gender Roles is a clearly written core text for courses on the sociology of gender/gender roles. Although appropriate for mid to upper level students, those without the introductory course in sociology can quickly navigate its contents so that early in the text students from all levels are on the same grounds. Focusing on the most recent research and theory–both in the U.S. and globally–it provides an in-depth, survey and analysis of modern gender roles and issues from a sociological perspective but also, integrates insights and research from other disciplines–especially biology, psychology, anthropology and history. Interdisciplinary material is guided by the sociological perspective, so students can understand the commonalities and differences in the ways the various disciplines research and explain gender. This text provides a balanced, non-polarized view of controversial issues that dispel gender myths and demonstrates how material can be meaningfully applied to a student’s personal life.

NEW—Pedagogical features throughout the book added at end of book—Includes end of chapter summaries, key terms and critical thinking questions, and a glossary.

NEW—Critiques found throughout the text—Shows differing interpretations of data from sociological theories and from other disciplines. Sheds light for students on controversial issues and trends (who does the housework and how much do they do; the impact of women in the labor force on family life, and the effect of the men’s movement on traditional masculinity.)

~Presents students with a method that allows controversies to be presented and evaluated in ways they will see as more neutral–hence more palatable.

NEW—Completely updated content—Accounts for major trends in gender issues, especially related to (multicultural) diversity and globalization. 70-80 percent of all references are new–most between the years 2000-2003.

~Gives students the most current text available on the market today.

NEW—Expanded chapter and text content on “Men and Masculinity”—Reflects increased interest and new research in men’s studies.

~Gives students a text that addresses men’s issues and material for males and females in most chapters.

NEW—Sections—Include gender, crime and the law; gender issues in sexuality and health, gender from postwar to the millennium; women and micoenterprise; and gender issues in education.

~Provides students with new treatments of such issues as: feminist branches, masculinity norms, the men’s movement, gender issues in health and sexuality, sexual orientation, gender and family diversity, gender patterns in gay and lesbian families, gender trends in interpersonal contemporary relationships and contemporary political debates, such as the ERA.

NEW—Enhanced information—Reflecting the most important 20th century gender trend: the massive entrance of women in the labor force.

~Integrates for students this emerging issue at key points throughout the text.

NEW—Expanded media chapter and text content—Reflecting the significant impact of the media on gender attitudes and roles.
