For one-semester undergraduate courses in Intermediate Spanish.

Exploring Latino culture in the U.S., this text will enable students to acquire not only a knowledge of the linguistic features of Spanish language, but also an understanding and appreciation of the people who speak it. Students will read about and listen to Latinos—through interviews, short stories, cultural selections, and video, acquire the vocabulary needed to discuss cultural themes, and communicate with Latinos—via actual or simulated interviews and e-mail—about the topics presented in a particular chapter.

  • Focus on Latino culture in the United States.
    • Promotes student understanding and appreciation of the Latino culture that they are most likely to encounter in their everyday lives.

  • Grammar review—Includes explanations in English of the chapter's grammar topics and includes examples of each.
    • Focuses on those cultural aspects of the Spanish language that are most essential for everyday communication and most problematic for English-speaking students of Spanish.

  • Unique video component.
    • Presents students with unscripted, spontaneous and unrehearsed Spanish that they are most likely to hear from Latinos living in the United States.

  • Entrevista.
    • Offers students practice for the actual interview they will conduct with an individual from their local Latino community, an individual contacted through the Internet, or a person featured on the video that accompanies the textbook.

  • Writing activities.
    • Helps students produce coherent writing examples by leading them through the processes of brainstorming, filling in charts or making lists, and using the information gathered in these activities to answer questions.

  • Oral exercises—Requires students to recycle vocabulary they are familiar with and apply it in a new context.
    • Gives students an opportunity to place themselves in a situation similar to one experienced by Hispanics interviewed in the text.
