For the sophomore/junior-level majors Environmental Geology course. Also appropriate for the introductory freshman/sophomore-level, non-majors course in higher-level departments.
Having originally defined the Environmental Geology course, this text is considered the most serious, detailed, and readable book at this level. The new edition continues to offer on of the most comprehensive, up-to-date treatments—from fundamental geologic principles to the specifics of environmental law and geologic hazards—all from a truly environmental perspective. It fully discusses both processes and environmental issues and details, where appropriate, the quantification of geologic processes.
- NEW - Unique new sections—"A Closer Look: Putting Some Numbers On..."—Appear in discussions of soil properties, exponential growth, landslides, flood frequency, seismic shaking, and beach budget. Includes worked numerical example problems with detailed explanations of the quantification methods used in environmental geologic analysis. (Modeled after the ground water “putting numbers on” examples of the 7th ed.)
-
Introduces students to analytical methods used by practicing geologists. Moves the discussion from descriptive to quantitative. Material appears in boxes and is optional—may be skipped without loss of continuity. Ex.___
-
- NEW - Extensively updated material and references—New research on “directivity” of seismic waves, updates on environmental law, coverage of El Niño and La Niña, extensively updated chapter references.
-
Introduces students to the most current and interesting research in the field. Ex.___
-
- Art program is extensively revised and updated.
-
An already excellent program of art and photography—A key element in promoting student understanding— has been further improved for clarity and currency. Ex.___
-
- Explained technology package for students and instructors.
-
Companion Website www.prenhall.com/keller—Provides an on-line guide, researched and annotated links to the best geology websites, Regional Updates with USGS Fact Sheets.
-
Presentation Manager— CD-ROM-based lecture presentation tool for instructors, containing all the line art and most of the photos from the text.
-
VR Excursions—Can be packaged with the text at a discount.
-
- Chapter One introduces the “Fundamental Concepts” of Environmental Geology—Population Growth, Sustainability, Systems, Limitation of Resources, Uniformitarianism, Hazardous Earth Process, and Geology as a Basic Environmental Science.
-
Provides an easily understandable framework that will help students understand and evaluate the philosophical and technical material presented in the text and course. Ex.___
-
- Engaging case histories open each chapter and appear throughout, many updated for the new edition.
-
Students are introduced to the chapter topic in context-sometimes humorous (the gold and silver mines of Palo Alto, CA), sometimes tragic (Mt. Unzen, Japan), always relevant-before tackling the details. In-chapter case histories bring the material to life through global examples, stories, and events. Ex.___
-
- Extensive lists of primary sources appear in each chapter.
-
Students are encouraged to explore the literature further through the scrupulously kept, comprehensive, current, and authoritative list of references. Ex.___

EDWARD A. KELLER is professor of environmental geology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he holds a joint appointment with the Environmental Studies Program and the Department of Geological Sciences. Professor Keller's research focuses on natural hazards, including wildfire, flooding, and earthquakes. He is also evaluating the environmental impacts of ecotourism. Professor Keller received his doctorate from Purdue University in 1973; as a graduate student, he wrote the first five chapters of the first edition of Environmental Geology. Professor Keller enjoys teaching and research, and hopes his textbooks help students to appreciate geology and to assist them in becoming better and more informed citizens in our complex world.
