  • An experiential Aligned Learning Method (ALM) approach—Throughout, first presents the material to be learned, then provides assignments that reinforce the information that has been presented, then tests only on that information.
    • Enables students to progress at their own pace, learning and retaining the knowledge over extensive periods of time, if not for life.

  • Designed for a diverse audience—Applicable to all design disciplines, e.g., interior design, fashion design, graphic design, hospitality design, architecture, landscape design, educational facilities design, healthcare design, product design, environmental design, lighting design.
    • Provides students with a thorough understanding of color and its effects, which can then be applied across disciplines and throughout the rest of a person's life.

  • Written in self-contained segments—Each chapter discusses a different aspect of color or a specific application area such as interiors, fashion, architecture, health, etc.

Dr. Kenneth R. Fehrman earned his doctoral degree from the University of San Francisco, specializing in color and its effects. He is a professor of Interior Design at San Francisco State University and has been a color consultant and interior designer for the past twenty-five years. He has also taught graphic design, environmental design, textiles and aesthetics. Dr. Fehrman is a member of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) and the Inter-Society-Color Council (ISCC).

Cherie Fehrman is an interior designer, color consultant, and writer. She has been Dr. Fehrman's color research assistant for many years. She has taught color and design courses at San Francisco State University, the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design, and the Western Design Institute. She is a member of the Inter-Society Color Council (ISCC) and the Authors Guild. She is also founding President of STOLA—Saluki Tree of Life Alliance, Inc., a national nonprofit hound rescue and welfare group.

The Fehrmans founded PRISM (Photochromatic Research Institute for Science and Marketing) in 1990 to disseminate accurate information about color/light. Separately and together, they have written seven books and several hundred articles. Currently, they continue their color research in the area of color/light therapy and give seminars on the effects of color/light. They have been successful in reversing paralysis in one of their own dogs using color/light therapy and have also extended quality of life in cases of kidney failure in several other dogs using color/light therapy. They are now pursuing this avenue further with veterinarians and are beginning work on their next book.

This integrated exploration of color and light incorporates not only the basics of color harmony and usage, but also information on the vast and often hidden ways in which color affects our everyday lives—culturally, psychologically, and physiologically. This book spans a wide range of design areas and focuses on an understanding of the concepts of color and its applications to all aspects of life, including health, aesthetics, interiors, architecture, fashion, graphics, and more. Research based, this book is organized by an aligned learning method that presents core content, provides reinforcement assignments, and then tests only on that information.

This second edition adds 200 new color images selected for their relationship to design. Also, the back of the book now includes a comprehensive set of tutorials and a workbook designed for experiential learning.

Color: The Secret influence is an authoritative textbook for all students who want to experience the world of color.
