Educators are better equipped to shape education today if they understand not only the historical context of education and its influence on education today, but also the contextual framework in which education developed over time. This history of education text gives the educator a unique and comprehensive view of the development of education from ancient times to the present by examining the social, political, economic and religious contexts in which education developed. Readers will come away with a rich understanding of the influence of the past on today's educational landscape.
- Discussion questions--Helps students analyze and think critically about what they have read. The focus of the book is on the connections from education in the past to education in the present, so thinking about the "links" is important.
- List of suggested activities--Encourage students to become actively involved in thinking about and researching the time period in question. For instance, some of the activities encourage students to participate more fully in the course by developing presentations on the topics in the chapter, or on an influential educator portrayed in the chapter, and presenting this information to their classmates.
- List of annotated websites--Help the students to look up information on the topics presented in the chapter, and help develop students' research skills. For the later chapters, which cover developments in modern education, such as No Child Left Behind, much of the information on such federal legislation is found on the Web.
- Suggestions for Further Reading--Helps students develop research skills, allowing them to read for themselves a source that was used to write the text, and to become aware of the differences between primary and secondary sources.
- Timeline of significant dates--Allows students to develop a chronological understanding of the history of education and the history of curriculum development.
- Learning Objectives--Help students to focus their attention on what to know before they read. It is an "advanced organizer" and should be very helpful to those students with learning disabilities who may have attention problems.
- Shapers of Education feature and tables--Throughout the book, an influential educator for each time period in question has been chosen for his or her influence on education. Located in every chapter.
