This thematic anthology of contemporary articles/court cases on race, sex, and gender is divided into three sections. The anthology identity issues, then injustices and inequalities, and then specific social and legal issues relevant to race, sex, and gender. By exposing students to theoretical foundations, opposing views, and “real life” applications, the reader prepares students to make critically-reasoned decisions concerning today's social problems.

  • Philosophical analysis of race, sex, and gender concepts.

    • Provides philosophy instructors with a text designed specifically with their needs in mind, saving them the time and work they usually have to spend in adapting other texts and materials on the subject (e.g., from sociology).

  • Independent, yet thematically linked, sections—Section I features articles and court cases that address sex, gender, and race identity and lay the theoretical foundation for the rest of the text. Section II includes articles and court cases that address inequalities and injustices—e.g., racism, sexism, heterosexism, and homophobia. Primarily theoretical in nature, they address questions such as “What is racism?” rather than discussion of particular social issues such as affirmative action. Section III offers 5 chapter-length discussions on different social issues—preferential treatment, discriminatory harassment, identity speech, sexual speech, and sexual assault—addressing various ways to conceptualize and legally respond to the issues. Throughout, each chapter includes some articles that touch on issues raised in the other chapters.
