For undergraduate courses in Language Development for preservice/early childhood majors or child development majors.

This text efficiently combines theory, research, and practice to provide a solid foundation for understanding language development from birth to age eight.  Language Development in Early Childhood focuses on supplying readers with a basic understanding of the phonetics, semantic, syntactic, morphemic, and pragmatic aspects of language knowledge acquired by young children.  In addition, the ways in which this acquisition process can be enhanced in early childhood settings are included.  In this revision, new material is included on the role of the brain in language development, along with key illustrations.  Also new to the second edition are vignettes of young children's language development which open each chapter.

  • Strong linguistic foundation with theories of language acquisition and provides links to best practice for enhancing young children's language development-For each of the developmental levels (infant-toddler, preschool, kindergarten,  and primary) a developmental chapter is followed by a chapter which focuses on ways to enhance language development for that level in early childhood settings(Ex. Chapter 6 pp 154/Chapter 7 pp 182).
  • A holistic perspective on language development is presented that links oral language development with children's emerging knowledge about written language-This approach provides students with a strong foundation for later coursework in language arts and literacy pedagogy(Ex. pp 20).
  • Chapter review at the end of each chapter focusing on terminology and in-depth questions-Students can use this review to prepare for class discussion and course tests, while instructors can use it for in-class small group discussions(Ex. pp 91-92).
  • Chapter Extension Activities are included at the end of each chapter-Provides opportunity to apply the concepts and knowledge presented in each specific chapter to an actual early childhood setting.  Through these activities, students will develop critical thinking, observational skills, and reflective practice(Ex. 93).

  • New material on the role of the brain in language development, along with key illustrations-Incorporates highlights of current brain research and the implications for language development(Ex. pp 34-39).
  • Introductory vignettes open each chapter-These vignettes set the stage for each chapter's content by providing a description of an early childhood setting, young children's language, and their interactions with others(Ex. pp 23).
  • Appendices provide supplementary information on additional readings-Professors and students can use these resources as a starting point for more detailed study of selected topics, as well as additional resources for enhancing language development during the early childhood years.  These resources will continue to be valuable to preservice teachers as they continue through their teacher preparation coursework in lesson and unit plans, as well as when they become practitioners in the field(Ex. pp 365-388, Appendixes A-J).
  • Appendix on Otitis Media (Ear Infections) provides extensive information on the symptoms, treatment, and prevention of ear infections-This resource, not found in other comparable texts, provides students with the information they need to understand this very common illness among young children(Ex. pp 366).
  • Test Bank and a series of overhead transparency masters-This feature will benefit instructors as they prepare plans for their language development course.
  • Part of the Merrill Teacher Prep Textbook Series.  Your students' textbook is now the ultimate resource for applying learned strategies to classroom practice.  "Things to Take Into Your Classroom" featured on the front and back cover of every Teacher Prep text lists page references for the book's strategies, plans, activities, lessons, and other resourceful materials for students to use in the classroom--making this text not just a book for learning, but a book for teaching.
