For undergraduate World Regional Geography courses, or for a courses on globalization or cultural diversity.
Diversity Amid Globalization explicitly acknowledges the geographic changes in today’s world by emphasizing both the homogenizing and diversifying forces inherent to the globalization process. This approach allows the authors to emphasize the interconnections that bind people and places together. The globalization approach challenges students to make critical comparisons between the regions of the
world in order to understand them more fully. Examples of the sorts of topics used to accomplish these goals include:
- The rise of Islamic fundamentalism in SW Asia.
- Aboriginal groups using high-technology tools to forge common political survival strategies.
- The economic and political integration of the European Union, contrasted with micronationalism and the factionalism in Europe.
- Ethnic diversification in the face of strong participation in the global assembly line in SE Asia.
- The globalization and localization of beer consumption and production in the United States and Canada.
- Thematic Structure of Regional Chapters
- While the over-arching chapter structure of the book is regional and organized around the generally accepted major world regions, the structure within each chapter is thematic. Rather than organizing individual chapters with descriptions of individual countries each regional chapter is organized into five thematic sections:
- Environmental Geography.
- Population and Settlement.
- Cultural Coherence and Diversity.
- Geopolitical Framework.
- Economic and Social Development.
- Fosters a more structured and penetrating treatment of geographic themes and concepts, and facilitates comparisons of specific topics between regions.
- Standardized Maps for All Regional Chapters
- Each regional chapter contains approximately 15 maps. Of these, no less than seven are organized around the same theme and designed to convey comparable material for each region. Each region includes the following maps:
- A chapter-opening map with countries and place names.
- A physical map, showing landforms hydrology, and tectonic boundaries.
- A climate map, with climograph call-outs giving temperature and precipitation data for specific cities.
- A “transformation of the Earth” map with call-outs to environmental issues and solutions within the region.
- A population map for the region.
- A map of regional languages.
- A geopolitical map with call-outs to current issues and tensions.
- This system allows student to compare and contrast concepts and data both within and between regions. Additionally, this system reinforces the book's emphasis on the global effect on local issues.
- Comparable Data Tables for All Regional Chapters
- Diversity Amid Globalization presents standardized tables in each regional chapter. Each chapter presents the following tables:
- Economic Indicators.
- Population Indicators.
- Social Development Indicators.
- Students can readily study one region in considerable detail and compare distributions and statistics between regions.

- Expanded Treatment of Globalization. Globalization has become increasingly important during the short history of this book. As a result, globalization is more central to the study of world regional geography now than it has ever been before. Thus we have once again expanded our initial discussion in Chapter 1 to present varying perspectives and viewpoints on globalization. Each regional chapter also has new information on globalization and its many-faceted implications.
- Increased Emphasis on Local People and Places. A major focus of the third edition has been to increase the book’s emphasis on local people and places. We weave this increased emphasis throughout the presentation in both the text and the supplemental materials. We highlight this new emphasis in four ways:
1: Prentice Hall World Regional Video Program. Every copy of Diversity Amid Globalization comes packaged with a DVD that features 15 video segments about the region at hand. These segments, specifically keyed to each chapter in the text provide a glimpse into local lives and local issues. Video segments are brief for easy classroom presentation.
2: Increased Attention on Subregions. The third edition of Diversity Amid Globalization features 30 new maps at the subregional scale that highlight important issues of local importance.
3: New “Global to Local” sidebars featured in each chapter. This new series of sidebars illustrates how global trends affect local areas and local people. The sidebars emphasize the fact that people respond to the same global forces very differently, and the variation in responses causes global forces to manifest themselves differently in different places.
4: New “Cityscapes” Sidebars. Each chapter now contains one “Cityscapes” sidebar. This new series of sidebars combine text, map, and photos to convey the sense of place for a city within each region.
- Current Data and Information. Of course, all text, tables, and maps have been updated with the most current information.
- New Sidebar Program. Sidebars. Within each chapter, a standard set of sidebars complement text material. These sidebars have varying goals.
1: “Setting the Boundaries” sidebars give a good overview of the region; discuss its role in the world today, often raising questions about its geographic coherence by accentuating its diversity; and looks at the vexatious issue of regional boundaries.
2: “Cityscapes” sidebars combine text, maps, and photos to convey a sense of place for a city within each regional chapter.
3: “Local Voices” sidebars allow us to step aside and let local peoples—through song, literature, or the Internet—talk about their region.
4: “Global to Local” sidebars highlight how global trends affect local areas and local people. The sidebars foreground the fact that people often respond to homogenizing global forces very differently, and this variation in responses gives unique character to local people and places.
5: “Geography in the Making” sidebars highlight late-breaking newsworthy content of geographic importance in each region.
6: “Geographic Tools” sidebars discuss the various tools–such as GIS, aerial photography, field surveys, repeat photography, and interviewing–geographers use to understand the world. These materials include case studies to illustrate how these tools are used in various regions.
