All the News: Writing and Reporting for Convergent Media is the first textbook to teach students how to write for a convergent newsroom where they will be required to report in print, online, radio and television formats. Grounded in the fundamentals of good news writing, students will also learn about journalistic ethics, writing for a diverse population, and mastering the mechanics of communicating through different media.

The goal of the basic news writing course is to prepare students to be proficient at evaluating information and crafting well written stories. This text embraces these objectives while also offering a fresh and realistic view of news writing in the 21st century–giving students the new set of tools that they’ll need to succeed in the convergent environment.

  • Emphasizes that journalists in the 21st Century will need to master the different formats of media: print, radio, television and online formats. Students will learn how to write for all of these formats and will be equipped to work in a convergent newsroom.
  • Hands-on learning is highlighted through the inclusion of “Assignment Desk” boxes in each chapter. These exercises and activities allow students to put what they’re learning into practice immediately.
  • Discussion questions at the end of each chapter encourage students to think about important trends and questions in journalism with the converged environment in mind.
  • Comprehensive coverage on research and interviewing (Ch. 3) prepares students to gather information using a range of technologies and techniques.
  • Chapters on journalistic principals, law and ethics and diversity (Ch. 14-16) offer in-depth focus on critical issues at the heart of journalism and help students produce a more professional quality in their work.
  • “Why I Chose Journalism?” boxes in each chapter present quotes from working journalists who come from a variety of media outlets. These journalists share their thoughts on why a career in journalism is a great choice, offering inspiration for students considering entry into the field.
  • MyCommunicationKit - MyCommunicationKit is an electronic supplement that offers book-specific learning objectives, chapter summaries, flashcards, and practice tests as well as video clips and activities to aid student learning and comprehension.
