Speaker-Listener-Message-Response Speech Model (S-L-M-R “slimmer” )—Presented in chapter 3, this model sensitizes students to audience-speaker interaction.

• Helps students understand the differences between written and oral communication.

Appearance and Credibility—Discussed in chapter 2 as they relate to audience perception of the speaker.

• Provides guidelines for addressing the touchy subject of personal appearance—clothing, tattoos, piercings, hygiene, etc. in class.

Guidelines for Ethical Presentations—Builds off of the Code of Professional Ethics from the National Speakers Association.

• Provides students with a framework for producing a proposal presentation.

Classification System for Graphics—Text, Data Graphics, and Representational Graphics.

• This unique classification system makes it easier to understand the relationship between the different kinds of visuals and which type is the right one to use in a particular situation.

Rogue’s Gallery of Problem Graphics—Presents examples of 6 problematic presentation graphics with explanations as to why they are not helpful.

• Teaches students how to recognize good graphics and avoid unhelpful visuals.

Mastering PowerPoint—Emphasizes effective use of this powerful tool.

• Presents pros and cons of PowerPoint usage and addresses good versus bad usage. Covers both basics and more advance PowerPoint techniques.
