For a 1 semester course in Business Statistics.

This paperback, 14 chapter  text focuses on using rich business applications from all  the functional areas of business to introduce the core concepts. The emphasis is on a clean, sophisticated presentation uncluttered by bells and whistles.

A more comprehensive version by these same authors is also available called Basic Business Statistics 10e.

How do you motivate students to see the value of this course since most students are here to complete a core requirement?

“Using Statistics” business scenarios—Each chapter begins with a “Using Statistics” example related to a different functional area of business and is woven throughout the chapter to illustrate key points and help students make connections.

  • Shows how statistics is relevant to all business majors-accounting, finance, management, marketing, operations, and information systems.

What business skills are you hoping your students will have mastered after completing your course?

Emphasis on data analysis and interpretation within chapter— Output from Excel and Minitab 14 are featured within the chapter.

  • Allows students to focus on interpreting the software output and  making informed business decisions.

What software do you use in this course? How much software instruction do you want a text to provide and where?

Featured Software- The authors use Excel and Minitab 14 output within the chapters. For those instructors that prefer to use an Excel add-in, PHSTAT2 is featured in Appendix G.

  • Showcases the most common packages used in the business world.

Detailed Software Appendices at the end of each chapter

  • Provides step-by-step instructions necessary to perform most statistical analsysis using Excel and Minitab 14.

Do you assign/grade homework? Would you be interested in an online resouce that offers text specific questions that can be assigned for practice/homework and save you grading time?

PH Grade Assist—Prentice Hall's Internet-based system provides algorithmically generated homework problems.

  • Provides unlimited practice for the student and scoring, grading, and course management for the instructor.

  • PHGradeAssist icons appear in the text next to exercises that are in this system.

This text is available for personalization in the PHCBR custom database program.  Select only the chapters you require or supplement with recommended case studies all under one cover.  CLICK HERE to go directly to the PHCBR book-build site or visit our product page for additional information at pearsoncustom.com/business.

How do you think students use texts?  How do you judge readability?  Do you think they read them cover to cover?  What types of resources help students succeed in the course?

Improved accessibility for students

  • Every chapter in the text has undergone major rewriting and the text now uses a more active, conversational writing style for students.
  • Now includes many more examples from everyday life, including those on online shopping (Chapter 2), time to get ready in the morning (Chapter 3), and waiting time at a fast food restaurant (Chapter 9).
  • Many problems have been simplified so that they contain no more than four parts.
  • Key formulas are now included at the end of each chapter.
  • Worked out solutions to Self-Test Questions are provided in the back of the text.
  • A roadmap for selecting the proper statistical method is included at the front of the text to help students select the proper technique and to make connections between topics.
  • Many new applied examples and exercises with data from the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Consumer Reports, and other sources have been added to the text.

What type of software do you use with your students?

Improved Software presentation

  • Now focus on using standard Excel worksheets to learn statistics and interpret results. llustrations of Excel worksheets show the cell formulas used to build the worksheet. In each chapter, an end-of chapter Excel appendix explains how to use the worksheets featured in the chapter. For those who choose to use the PHStat2 Excel add-in instead, a PHStat2 appendix (Appendix G) is provided as well.
    • Teaches students how to use Excel "as is" since that is what most students will use in the business world.
  • Updated version of PHStat2 and a separate PHStat2 Appendix– PHStat2 version 2.5, the newest version of Prentice Hall’s supplemental add-in program for Microsoft Excel is bundled free with this text. This updated version includes enhancements such as the ability to work with recent Microsoft Office security updates, multiple regression with independent variables in noncontiguous columns, improved stem-and-leaf displays and box-and-whisker plots, the Z- test for the difference in two means, Levene’s test for the homogeneity of variance, and the Marascuilo multiple comparisons procedure  for proportions. Appendix G collects all of the instructions for using the add-in with this textbook in one handy-to-use reference. (PHStat2 Support, including updates when available, can be found at www.prenhall.com/phstat.)
    • PHStat2 enhances the capabilities of Excel allowing you to do more statistical analysis.
  • Features Minitab Version 14— All Minitab output in the text and all Minitab appendixes are from Minitab Version 14.
    • Provides the latest version of the Minitab statistical software.
