Communicative Language Teaching in Action: Putting principles to work is designed as a basic text that demonstrates principles and practices of communicative language teaching and task-based instruction. Its primary purpose is to serve as a guide for second and foreign language teachers in training or for those who have embarked on a new career as language teachers. In particular, these include pre- and in-service teacher education majors, university teaching assistants, and English as a Second Language (ESL) majors and instructors. Furthermore, it is meant to be a resource for practicing teachers in continuing education programs.

Communicative Language Teaching in Action takes an eclectic approach to presenting theoretical concepts and application. This eclectic approach has a solid theoretical foundation that is supported by empirical research data. The conceptual foundation in this book draws upon a plethora of theoretical and empirical research findings in second language acquisition, cognitive psychology and brain research, and puts forth those instructional practices that have been found to achieve the highest effects in language learning.

Communicative Language Teaching in Action serves a dual goal:

1. It aims at providing a conceptual foundation on many issues related to language learning and teaching. A solid understanding of theoretical issues in language pedagogy must be considered fundamental to being effective as a teacher.

2. It aims at emphasizing the pragmatic side of language teaching by demonstrating and applying many theoretical concepts in context.  In order to achieve this goal, a wide range of examples, taken from textbooks in different languages, have been included. Whole and excerpts of actual lessons, which were developed by experienced language teachers in the field, are also provided to demonstrate how communicative language teaching is put into action. All chapters further include a set of practical guidelines that allow instructors to apply communicative teaching strategies to their own learning contexts.

2.             Short-term and daily lesson planning

6.             Instructional sequencing and task design
