A text in pharmacology which finally meets the needs of the allied health student. The focused teach-and-test approach of this textbook provides allied health students with the perfect blend of concise content and an enjoyable—even fun—learning process.
A focused approach to learning pharmacology, the introductory chapters lay the groundwork for learning this subject by explaining the history of pharmacology, discussing the legal and ethical principles involved, illustrating drug administration techniques, reviewing math, and explaining drug calculations.
Using a five-heading approach to focused pharmacologic principles, each drug chapter focuses on drugs used to treat a certain body system or disease type. The chapters open with a concise review of anatomy and physiology to provide students with a foundation from which to understand the pharmacologic principles actions, effects, and uses of the drugs that treat a body system or disorder. The pharmacologic principles are succinctly explained by using clearly identifiable headings in question format that helps focus students’ attention on the most important points about a drug class or an individual drug:
- How do they work?
- How are they used?
- What are the adverse effects?
- What are the contraindications and interactions?
- What are the most important points patients should know?
Whichever approach is taken in the chapter, the five question headings are used so students can easily focus on the key “need-to-know” drug information.
Comes with a Student CDROM that includes games, a drug audio glossary and a regular audio glossary:
Types of Games on the Student CD:
- Matching
- Beat the Clock
- Gridlock
- Racing
- Double or nothing
- Crossword Puzzle
- Wordsearch

Do your students have difficulty retaining new information?
Teach-and-Test Approach to Focused Learning of Pharmacology - Learning small amounts of information and testing yourself on what you’ve just learned is a proven way to retain new information and makes learning about pharmacology an engaging, interactive process. This text includes a large number of exercises, implemented in three ways with answers in an appendix.
Practical Scenario Short scenarios involving fictional patients with real-life problems concerning medications open each chapter. A list of 3 or 4 questions follows and includes criticial thinking questions. Apply Your Knowledge - Includes strategically placed exercises within the chapters (rather than at the end). Exercises include fill-in-the blank, labeling, matching, and multiple choice, as well as more pharmacology-specific exercises such as dosage calculations and drug name exercises. These provide the student with an immediate review of all vital content. Checkpoint Reviews - Unit "tests" are review questions that reflect the format on most certifying and licensing exams, and include multiple choice and essay questions
Are your students motivated by real world examples?
- Case studies, called Focus on Real World Pharmacology, are included in each Checkpoint Review. Many of these questions are based on real-life situations as described by a diverse array of health professions and also involve legal and ethical topics.
What is your approach to Focused Drug Dosing Information in class?
Each drug chapter includes tables of all drugs discussed in the chapter, arranged by drug classes and formatted to include generic and trade names, adult dosing, and route of administration.
How do you cover special populations and other drug related points in your class?
- Focus Points: These marginal features highlight significant or difficult concepts in pharmacology.
- Focus on Pediatrics andGeriatrics: Boxes highlight pediatric or geriatric information specific to pharmacology.
- Focus on Natural Products: Boxed feature highlights drug interactions related to complementary and alternative medicines, including Herbs, supplements, and foods.
What other pedigogical features do you find useful for students?
Each chapter includes:
Chapter Objectives
Key Terms with pronunciations
Chapter Capsule: a review of each chapter objective with bulleted summaries of the key information for each objective
