This new 4-color, step-by-step approach to medical transcription is a complete learning package that includes textbook and interactive CD-ROM containing a total of 10 hours of authentic physician dictation, Instructor's Manual, and Transcript Keys. It provides a glimpse into the practice of transcribing in each medical specialty with transcription tips which offer handy suggestions to increase accuracy. It contains new exercises which relate specifically to the dictations and are designed to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills in the students.
A new CD ROM is included with each book and includes REAL physician dictation as well as a myriad of activities connected with this dictation. The new CD-ROM system in Medical Transcription Fundamentals and Practice, 3e ensures that users of this book will meet the needs of the Medical transcription industry which has moved almost completely to the computer based CD-ROM systems. *
* Students will still need to purchase and use foot pedals for this course. There is foot pedal purchasing information in the preface of the book. Foot pedals can be ordered directly from HPI by going to their website at www.HPISUM.com
New Features included in the text to develop student's Critical Thinking skills:
Exercises and activities that relate specifically to the dictations the students are transcribing.
Three activities designed to be completed prior to transcribing dictations appear at the end of each chapter and include Using the Style Guide, Problem Solving, and Preparatory Research. The fourth activity designed to be completed after the transcription of dictations, appears only in the Instructor's Guide and is called Engaging the Content.
Brand new Interactive CD features:
Three interactive and FUN games and crossword puzzles help students learn and remember relevant terminology from the textbook readings AND from the dictations themselves.
If students play the games before transcribing, they will learn to spell and define terms that will appear in the dictations.
In all the games and in the crossword puzzle, new terms/definitions are randomly generated each time a student starts , so they can play the same game or work the crossword puzzle many times and be exposed to new terms each time.
The games include:
- Beat the Clock: Randomly generated definitions appear in a pop-up window; students type the correct term and must answer a certain number correctly within a given amount of time in order to "beat the clock."
- Cognition: A memory game similar in concept to the old TV show Concentration; terms are hidden behind squares and students try to pick the correct square/term which matches the definitions that are provided.
- Strikeout: Similar to hangman or Wheel of Fortune, Strikeout is a timed game giving students definitions and fill in blanks with letters until they complete the term. If they fill in three wrong letters before completing the term, they "strike out."
- Crossword puzzle is a standard crossword.
Additional features of the text include:
- Proofreading exercises— Provide students with the opportunity to practice correction of style, spelling, and grammar errors.
- Skills challenge— Offers various end-of-chapter exercises to reinforce content.
- Sample reports —Offer readers model transcribed reports.
- Transcription practice —Prompts students to apply concepts by transcribing.
- Bloopers —Point out humorous yet common errors made in transcription
- Quick reference word list —At the back of the text contains words or phrases not readily found in dictionaries.
