Crossing America is an interactive reading, writing, and grammar text that focuses on competencies that skilled readers and writers must master. The text follows a thematic approach designed to provide cultural knowledge and awareness both to native speakers of English and to the limited-English language population.
- Focuses on an awareness of the diversity in American culture. Includes the works of many American ethnic minority writers
- Chapter Opening Quotes- Stimulates interest and discussion, each unit opens with a quotation that introduces the theme. After the quotation is a list of American idioms related to the unit’s subject matter. An introduction and a skills map follows
- Variety of Reading- Each unit contains at least one literary essay, non-fiction article from a popular periodical, a work of fiction and poetry. These selections support the theme of the unit and provide the framework for the unit’s activities and assignments
- Pre-reading activities, comprehension questions covering the required reading skills, vocabulary and idiom development, and topics for discussion are included in each of the reading selections.
- Dictionary activities that encourage vocabulary development and correct word usage are included in each unit.
- Writing assignments include a summary to reinforce the comprehension of the readings, paragraph assignments focusing on specific rhetorical modes, and a reflective paragraph that encourages critical thinking through further exploration of the unit’s theme.
- An Internet field trip experience that combines reading and writing activities and encourages the student to explore the theme follows the writing component. Follow-up activities vary from reading comprehension questions, to summary writing, to mapping activities.
- Grammar pointers are given within each writing section of the units. They support the predictable errors commonly associated with the organizational patterns of writing.
- Editing exercises include samples of student writing.
- Each unit concludes with a list of films related to the theme and activities that encourage students to build background knowledge
