  • New sequencing of exercise sets.  Exercises (Aplicación) now progress consistently from form focused exercises to meaning-focused exercises and finally to communicative exercises Some activities and direction lines have been simplified and some models have been added
    • Establishes a more explicit progression from mechanical to communicative activities. Revised directions make activities more clear and efficient
  •  Chapter openers adjusted. The chapter-opening readings (Así es la vida) have been moved to fall on the left hand page only. Comprehension checks have been added and more words have been glossed.
    • Shortening the opening readings underscores the progression of difficulty in each chapter and allows students to feel more confident as they begin a new lesson
  •  Shorter readings. The literature readings (Páginas) have been shortened and simplified (rephrased, more glosses), and now have pre and post- reading activities in every chapter.
    • Páginas have been updated and adapted to be more consistently intermediate in level
  • Review sections added.  Two new review sections, entitled A repasar, have been added to each chapter to recycle grammar concepts from proceeding chapters
    • Reviewing challenging content in creative and meaningful ways gives students a helpful review before going on to more difficult material.
  • New Chapter 1.Completely revamped Chapter 1, based on a new theme: the 20th Century (Siglo XX Así fue)
    • Gives interesting contextual framework to preterite and imperfect verb tenses; allows students to use these structures as they discuss el siglo XX as part of the past. 
  • New opening activity.  Each chapter opens with a new feature, Curiosidades, consisting of 3-5 trivia questions related to chapter theme.
    • Invites students to explore chapter theme in a fun, interactive opening exercise
  • Cuidado boxes moved.  The Cuidado boxes which caution students against commonly-made mistakes are retained but those related to semantics appear in Así lo decimos, and those related to grammar appear in Así lo hacemos.
    • Re-positioning provides better flow of material.
  • Comparisones section consolidated.  Cultural comparison is now the focus of one section in each chapter, entitled Comparisones. Each of these sections includes activities that invite students to reflect on their own experiences (En tu experiencia) and to express their opinions about the target culture (En tu opinión).
    • Comparison section becomes a mini-reading activity with pre- and post reading activities,  efficiently integrating the national standards into the flow of the chapter.
  •  Así lo Expresamos realigned.  The third and final part of each chapter (formerly entitled Así lo expresamos) has been renamed Conexiones. Conexiones now includes the writing section, Taller, which has pre- and post-writing activities in every chapter.
    • This makes compliance with National Standards more explicit and highlights disciplines treated there.The process approach is used equally with all four skills
  • New songs.  The popular “Ritmos” feature has been retained, but six songs have been changed (in Chapters 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 12).  Pre- and post-listening activities have been added to the text for each song.
    • Updated selections maintain a thematic and grammatical link to the chapter objectives. New activities exploit opportunities for communicative and grammatical practice within reference of the song.
  • New Art Pieces.  The popular “Imágenes” feature has been retained, but one new fine art piece has been added to Chapter 1: Hombre en la encrucijada, by Diego Rivera.
    • Inclusion of a fine art piece that is thematically linked to the chapter aids class discussion.
  •  New design. The design and illustration program has been updated and includes new icons for website pair and group activities, review sections, consistent design of verb charts, 101 new photos, and 20 new line art pieces.
    • New design features give the text a fresh look. Added photos make content more appealing.
