For courses in Student Success in high school, career college, community college, or university settings.

This working textbook and integrated CD was developed to engage students in assessing their current academic and workplace skills and develop specific action plans to insure both academic and personal success. The first six chapters focus on the internal (or intrapersonal) success skills. Stress management lays the foundation and is followed by positive attitude, time management, and goal setting. Three chapters are devoted to academic skills to include learning styles, critical/creative thinking, improving memory, and test taking.  While the first six chapters focus on how to do well “within yourself”, the last four will deal with succeeding “within your program and beyond.” These skills focus on communication, group interaction, team building, job-seeking, and leadership development.

Highly interactive and fun CD to enhance understanding of the concepts in the text.  The text and CD focus on making positive behavioral changes rather than learning “tons” of theory.

  • It is important for the student to realize WHY each particular subject will benefit them and HOW they can implement positive change.  After reading the chapter and performing the interactive exercises and assessments, the student will then be directed to the corresponding CD chapter, which provides examples and exercises to help further reinforce the strategies discussed in the text.

Personalized Assessment and Interactive Techniques.  The text and CD materials allow students to assess their strengths and areas that need improvement. It then helps them to develop personalized action plans (pgs. 12, 26, 73).

  • The CD interactively reinforces the material and gives the student the ability to track their progress.

Effective Affective Behavioral Change Techniques.  Short, simple, and effective techniques are used so the student can actually make these behavioral changes.

  • Keeps concepts simple, yet focused. Students will see quick results, which motivate them to move forward.  Relevant learning and a simple, conversational writing style helps students to learn and personalize their strategies for skills development.  Examples relate WHY these skills are needed and HOW to develop them fully.

Logical Learning Organization.  The first six chapters focus on the student’s internal success skills to “get them grounded” in the basics before moving on to higher level skills or tasks.

  • How can a student do well if they are “stressed out” and this impacts everything else we ask them to do?  Stress management lays the foundation to harness their stress in a positive manner in order to enjoy a positive attitude and set personal goals so they are prepared to move into the interpersonal skill areas to maximize their external success skills.

Readability.  A conversational style, peppered with humor and “gee whiz” facts, make the material less theoretical and more personal.

Behavioral changes must be simple, interactively reinforced and show quick, positive results in order to take permanent hold.  This working textbook and integrated CD helps students to assess their current academic and workplace skills and develop specific action plans to insure both academic and personal success.

This text gets to the “heart of the matter” through personal assessment and the development of goal-oriented action plans to improve students' skills.

Features include:

  • Highly interactive and fun CD — presents concepts in simple, practical steps rather than only in theoretical approaches, using personalized assessments and engaging techniques
  • Behavioral Change Techniques — short, simple, and effective techniques help students make lasting behavioral changes
  • Logical Learning Organization -  focus on student’s internal success skills to “get them grounded” in the basics before moving on to higher-level skills or tasks

“WOW!!  This is just what new students need in a book!! I can’t state how impressed I am with this author and the text.  This approach will be very effective for new students.”

--Michelle Buchman, Everest College

“The examples are exceptional and very in touch with the realities of the student. This is rare in most textbooks. In most books it seems as if the author might be trying very hard to understand what the student is really going through. However, this text has the feel and attitude that the author truly understands the challenges of the college student and has practical and realistic advice.  It does and excellent job at this.”

--Theresa Tuttle, ECPI College of Technology
