The Working Writer is a brief, process-oriented writing guide, including a combination of purposes and genres.  The author stresses the importance of building students' confidence through finding their own voice in writing, using journaling and other strategies. The Working Writer has more coverage of research than any other brief rhetoric.

Do your students need help with the writing process and the rhetorical situation?

The Working Writer, 5th edition, is a brief yet comprehensive rhetoric, meant to guide students through a process approach to learning to write.  Working Writer, 5e is organized around the different but overlapping stages of writing of planning, drafting, researching, revising, and editing.  It explains and illustrates issues of style, punctuation, and mechanics as matters of choices that depend upon audience, purpose and situation rather than static and absolute rules.

Do your students need strategies to become more confident in their writing?

  • In-depth discussions of qualitative issues in writing–e.g., journals, voice, collaborative writing, field research, creative nonfiction, and writing portfolios. Features a whole chapter on using journals, with many authentic samples.

o       Enables students who have not used journals in academic settings to learn how to use them to improve their learning as well as their writing.

How important is research in your course and in students' college experience?

  • A heavy focus on integrating research into all dimensions of undergraduate writing–considers the research process as a natural part of the writing process.  (See Section IV - Conducting Research in the Disciplines)

o       Introduces students to three modes of research–Internet, library, and field–and recommends all three for comprehensive research writing.

  • Plagiarism - In-depth explanation of how to avoid plagiarism with special attention to using sources effectively and honestly (see concluding section of Working with Sources)

What challenges do students have integrating revision as part of the writing process?

  • Revising and editing as a natural part of all good writing–emphasizes revision as the major work of writing classes, and includes specific strategies. (See Part III, Revising and Editing)

o       Offers students specific–and innovative–suggestions for returning to a text and seeing it from a new perspective.

How well do your students understand and implement visual rhetoric in writing?

  • Chapter on Reading Images Critically follows Reading Texts Critically in order to offer students a critical vocabulary for discussing the increasing use of visual imagery in all texts, including the texts that students write themselves.
  • Frequent use of visual images throughout to illustrate their role in contemporary rhetoric.
