This curriculum book presents the infant-toddler care preservice or practicing teacher with research-based activities and developmentally appropriate practices for interactions, environments, and routines.  Emphasizing a relationship-based approach and reflecting on the child's individuality (including his culture), this text helps adults working with infants and toddlers can make great use of the world's endless opportunities for learning and relationship building. The authors use a three-step approach - Respect, Reflect, and Relate - as a framework for thinking about learning opportunities as they occur. Many chapters include planning guides (for groups and individuals) and a self-reflection tool on individual teacher practices.

  • Introduces students to how responsive relationships and the teacher's decisions are based on observation of each child (Ch. 5 & 6)
  • Utilizes a three step approach to planning for children and in working with families - Respect, Reflect, and Relate. (Ch. 1, 5, and woven through Chapters 7-14)
    • Respect - introduces the major concepts for infants and toddlers in that domain.
    • Reflect- offers a set of questions for thinking about development in that domain.
    • Relate - Divides the children into three age groups covered in this book then begins with a short statement about that group and the effect of developmental themes. Includes a scenario describing an infant care teacher and the four children he/she is caring for. Each scenario focuses on a different developmental domain.
  • A list of suggested "Books for Babies" in the Toddlers and Twos section of many chapters.
  • Planning guides for the individual or group at the end of each age grouping.
  • At the end of each chapter:
    • An "Inventory of Teacher Practices" to encourage self-observation and reflection.
    • Questions for reflection or application which can be used by an individual or for group discussion in a classroom or online.
