Course: Ethics courses taught in Legal Studies, Paralegal Studies, and Legal Assistant programs.
Ethics for the Legal Professional sets the standard for professional responsibility textbooks. Now in its sixth edition, the text has been reorganized to reflect the changes in the paralegal profession. It begins with concrete concepts that have been given some clear direction in the courts and state legislatures (UPL confidentiality and conflicts) before moving on to the more technical, rule-driven concepts (advertising, billing and fees), and then to the most abstract rules (competence, zealous representation and integrity). Written from the viewpoint of the paralegal, this book uses plain English and an upbeat tone to keep readers engaged. It then reinforces each chapter’s learning objectives with improved end-of-chapter materials such as multiple choice, fill in the blank and true/false questions. Unique to the 6th Edition, is end of chapter materials for classroom collaborative learning activities, hypotheticals for classroom discussion, and cases for consideration, each with their own set of questions. Still the most popular book in its genre, the 6th Edition continues to tackle the most important ethical issues facing paralegals today in a frank, conversational style. New to this edition are 24 scenario-based videos that deal with the most common ethical situations paralegals will encounter on the job.

Hallmark Features
Written from the viewpoint of the paralegal—not a lawyer.
- Keeps the tone warm and the language user-friendly, and creates a sense of camaraderie by drawing the reader into the paralegal profession.
Written using plain English—throughout the text
- Avoids legalese and jargon so the material is easier to understand
Hypothetical situations—begin and end each chapter
- Provide a real-world context from which to apply case law presented in the chapter.
- At the end of each chapter, the student is invited to review the opening hypothetical again, this time with new knowledge from the chapter.
Questioning framework—guides each section
- Introduces each section of every chapter with a question and then provides the answer in the material that follows.
- Goes beyond most texts to not only pose questions, but also provide answers that improve clarity and increase understanding.
- Allows the student to stay focused on the lesson objectives from the beginning of the chapter through to the end.
New! Reorganized to reflect the changes in the paralegal profession–beginning with what paralegals and lawyers are and ending with a discussion of the umbrella duty of integrity.
- Organizes coverage from concrete concepts to abstract concepts in three steps–i.e. begins with concrete concepts (UPL confidentiality and conflicts) before moving on to the more technical, rule-driven concepts (advertising, billing and fees), and then to the most abstract rules (competence, zealous representation and integrity).
- Helps make the material more relevant to the paralegal and increases their opportunity for understanding.
New! A separate chapter for fees and billing–see Chapter 6.
- Includes a more complete discussion of client trust accounts as well as pro bono service, referral fees, types of fee agreements, retainers and more!
New! Expanded discussions of how technology impacts the rules of ethics!
- Discusses how technology has affected the duty of confidentiality and the attorney/client privilege, including a discussion on the use of metadata, a section on storing and destroying client files, and a section on lawyers using “pretexting”.
New! Improved end-of-chapter exercises, cases, hypotheticals for class discussion and classroom collaborative activities!
- Offers a variety of assignment materials at the end of each chapter, including: multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions; cases for consideration; collaborative activities for small groups of students, and hypotheticals including the case on which each is based so students can discover how a court resolved the issue.
- Provides students and instructors with many different ways to learn about the chapter material and many assessment methods.
- Each chapter has something for the visual learner, audible learner, kinesthetic learner and the learner who wants to have fun and learn at the same time!
New! Model Rules appear as they are referenced in the text — via separate boxes integrated into each chapter.
- Places pertinent information at the reader’s fingertips.
- Appendices include the NALA and NFPA codes so the student can find this important material easily for comparing and contrasting.
