For one semester/one quarter Sociology and General Education courses in Race and Ethnic Relations.
Richard Schaefer grew up in Chicago in the 1960's, at a time when neighborhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition. He found himself fascinated by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighborhoods and people's jobs. These experiences led to a career in sociology, and he is now a leading scholar on racial and ethnic relations.
This book grew out of a desire to help students to understand the changing dynamics of the U.S. population. This text is an accessible, comprehensive, and up-to-date introduction to the issues confronting racial and ethnic groups in both the U.S. and other countries. Organized first by issues and then by major racial and ethnic groups, it examines each group’s history, explores its current situation, and its concerns for the future.
This is the text that provides an accessible, comprehensive, and up-to-date introduction to the issues confronting racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. and around the world.
Hallmark features of Race and Ethnicity:
- Student-friendly introduction of core topics: The first five chapters of the text introduce students to the basic concepts- prejudice, discrimination, immigration, ethnicity and religion, in the study of race and ethnic relations.

- Listen to Our Voices feature provide first hand commentaries on race and ethnicity in America. This helps students to appreciate the expression and passion of racial and ethnic groups in response to prejudice and challenges. These have been updated and revised for the 11th edition.
- Intergroup Relations Continuums conclude certain chapters with this visual continuum to help students understand a particular group’s experience within the dominant White culture of the US, from extermination or expulsion to instances of assimilation and pluralism, in a consistent framework.
- Student Voice questions in every chapter encourage students to think critically about the material.

Richard Schaefer, a leading scholar in the area of racial and ethnic relations, grew up in Chicago in the 1960's, at a time when neighborhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition. He found himself increasingly intrigued by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighborhoods and people's jobs. Content
“Race relations are an ever-changing phenomenon in our society. As it stands today, diversity is a must. This textbook challenges us to think in many different directions as it relates to race and ethnic groups in and outside of the United States. The students are challenged to look outside of the traditional perpective by gaining and understanding of other viewpoints. In addiction, students are challenged to embrace their cultures as well as other cultures. This textbook will provide the students with a great understanding of race and ethnicity. The topics are appropriate, logical, and realistic. The authors have a good command of the literature and present it well. The research is documented and sound. Upon reading this textbook students will be able to have a full understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity nationally and globally.”

I can then assume that the students have the basic knowledge they need to understand what I am elaborating on or adding during the class period or what is needed to have a productive class discussion.”
