Professionalism in Healthcare, 3/e addresses the special skills and attitudes that a  worker must possess to be recognized as a health care professional. This text stresses the idea that professional recognition isn’t automatically bestowed upon a person when he or she completes an educational program, obtains a degree or certificate, or secures a license to practice. Recognition as a healthcare professional has to be earned and maintained each and every day. Professionalism is a state of mind, a way of “being,” “knowing,” and “doing” that distinguishes "exceptional" workers from the "ordinary".  Enhancing professionalism has become a major challenge for healthcare educators, employers, and personnel. This text helps meet that challenge by describing the professional standards that apply to all health care workers—the “common ground” that everyone shares in providing the quality care and service excellence that today's patients deserve and demand.

  • Provides basic, fundamental information important to all allied health and nursing students as well as incumbent workers
  • Establishes the importance of every job in healthcare and the need for professionalism
  • Conversational style of writing used for ease of student comprehension
  • Thought-provoking questions posed throughout the text to keep students actively engaged
  • End-of-the-Chapter Learning Activities: Includes text review questions that assess mastery of chapter objectives along with “What If?” Scenarios posing real-life situations
  • Key Terms & Glossary: Key terms are listed at the beginning of each chapter and the Glossary is provided at the end of the text
  • Text includes a Student CD-ROM with Video Scenarios, Chapter Quizzes, Self-Assessments with Next Step Action Plans, Learning Opportunities, and an electronic Resume Builder tool
  • A comprehensive Instructor's Resource Manual and Instructor CD-ROM with Test Generator are available for qualified adopters

Added:

  • Expanded content: Chapter One – HIPAA, patient rights, core behaviors for success, and job performance evaluations
  • Expanded content: Chapter Three – self-directed work teams, respecting and valuing diversity, do’s and don’ts when using electronic communication, and service excellence in caring for hospitalized patients and their family members.

  • Expanded content: Chapter Four – generation-based differences, how people may stereotype you based on body piercing, tattoos, hairs styles and colors etc. and power point slides now provide photographs of compliance and non-compliance with dress codes and professional image standards
  • Expanded content: Chapter Six – filling out employment applications, interview do’s and don’ts, and what employers look for in job applicants
