For Fundamentals of Reading and Vocabulary Development courses.

Basic College Vocabulary approaches vocabulary development with a unique and proven systematic strategy called SSCD–See and Say the word, use Structural analysis, apply Context clues and incorporate Dictionary knowledge. The text addresses the need for identifying learning styles and reinforces the system with techniques to develop a repertoire of memory steps to improve retention of information.

  • Systematic vocabulary development strategy–SSCD, See and Say the word, use Structural analysis, apply Context clues and incorporate Dictionary knowledge.
    • Provides students with a strategic vocabulary development system that helps them to learn to use the information provided to help them gain word meaning and to apply it to other unknown words.
  • Learning styles as the basic approach to learning vocabulary–Using the VARK Learning Inventory.
    • Enables students to learn about themselves and how they learn best, so that they can adapt their learning to a variety of situations and set themselves up to be successful.
  • Extensive pedagogical aids formatted consistently in each chapter–i.e., List of words, associated word parts, pronunciations, definition of word parts, words presented in context sentences, dictionary definitions and practice exercises.
    • Provides students with an accessible presentation of the material.
  • Power words conclude each chapter–With pronunciations, definitions, sentences and exercises.
    • Provides students with additional, interesting words that do not fit into the word parts for that chapter.
  • Chapter Reviews conclude each chapter.
    • Provides students with review exercises, a puzzle and activities specifically designed to enhance learning for each learning style.
  • Memory principles throughout.
    • Helps students most effectively learn the new vocabulary and gives them information they can transfer to other academic and nonacademic learning situations.

  • Exercise Expanded Word Forms - Students need to understand and use the correct placement of the different forms of the words in sentences and paragraphs.
  • NEW- addition of synonyms for list of terms. This provides students with additional vocabulary to use.
