A Core Race & Ethnicity text that covers 6 main topics:

Theories & Concepts in Race & Ethnicity

Prejudice

Discrimination

Immigration in the U.S.

Religion

U.S. & its diverse population

This concise topical introduction to race and ethnicity in the U.S. explores prejudice, discrimination, immigration, ethnicity, and religion in their historical and current contexts. Based on the opening chapters of the best-selling Racial and Ethnic Groups, this new  edition covers the major topics that anchor courses in multiculturalism, diversity, and race and ethnic relations.

  • Extremely accessible narrative clearly explains each topic.
  • A Chapter Outline appears at the beginning of each chapter, and is followed by Highlights, a short section alerting students to important issues related to the subject.
  • Each chapter ends with a Conclusion and Key Terms to help students review
  • Review Questions and Critical Thinking questions reinforce the material covered in the chapter, and can be used to spark debate and class discussion.
  • The popular boxed feature Listen to Our Voices incorporates scholarly findings from a variety of relevant disciplines, including economics, anthropology, and communication sciences.
  • Research Focus highlights relevant research in the subject area of each chapter.

  • A new marginal feature “Ask Yourself” ties selected images in the book to the student’s own experiences. For example:
    • Chapter One: The “Ask Yourself” feature reads: “Who are we in terms of race or ethnicity?  Do you ever ask someone ‘What are you?’ or ‘Where are you from’ because you are uncomfortable with not knowing?”
    • Chapter Two: an image shows a youthful member of a hate group. The “Ask Yourself” feature reads “Suppose you encounter a person whose prejudices is obvious. Will you say or do anything? What of it is a friend who speaks despairingly of all members of some ethnic or religious group? Will you speak out? When do you speak out?”
  • Chapter Five has added coverage of “Irish Americans” and “Polish Americans” to provide broader coverage of White ethnic groups.
  • Every figure, graph and topic has been updated to incorporate the most recent statistical data.
  • Includes the latest scholarly research and contemporary examples.

    Brief Description

Richard Schaefer grew up in Chicago in the 1960's, at a time when neighborhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition.  He found himself fascinated by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighborhoods and people's jobs.  These experiences led to a career in sociology, and he is now a leading scholar on racial and ethnic relations.

This book grew out of his desire to help students to understand the changing dynamics of the U.S. population. This text is an accessible, comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the issues confronting racial and ethnic groups in both the U.S. and other countries.
