MyReadingLab is the first and only online learning system to diagnose both students' reading skills and reading levels. This remarkable program utilizes diagnostic testing, personalized practice, and gradebook reports to allow instructors to measure student performance and help students gain control over their reading.
Specifically created for developmental students, MyReadingLab is a website that provides diagnostics, practice, tests, and reporting on student reading skills and student reading levels.
Student reading skills are improved through a mastery-based format of exercises and tests. Exercises include objective-based questions, open-ended questions, short answer questions, combined skills exercises and more.
Student reading level is assessed through a Lexile framework (developed by Metametrics™, an educational measurement expert). Once diagnosed, students are assigned a Lexile number, which indicates their reading comprehension skills, and throughout the program, the Lexile number rises as the students' reading level improves.
The result of this skills and level combination is a personalized student study plan to address individual needs and quantifiable data that measures individual student reading level advancement.

Student Features:
- Reading Skills Assessment and Practice - Derived from the best selling reading site available (Reading Road Trip) the skills section of MyReadingLab takes students on a tour of 16 cities and landmarks throughout the United States , with each of the 16 modules corresponding to a reading or study skill. The topics include main idea, vocabulary, understanding patterns of organization, thinking critically, reading rate, note taking and highlighting, graphics and visual aids, and more. Students can begin their trip by taking a diagnostics test that assesses students' mastery of fifteen critical reading skills and then guides them to specific modules for help with thier individual reading skills. Types of questions include multiple choice, matching, and open ended questions.
- Reading Level Assessment and Practice - In addition to building discreet reading skills, students and instructors can assess student reading level and provide practice to help them improve. Once their reading level is established through diagnostic testing, students are offered a unique set of exercises customized to thier individual reading level . Once completed, they affect the student reading level score. Readings provided in the level section are organized by topic and were selected from textbooks and popular readings. These exercises are designed to help students improve their reading level through practice and testing.
- Personalized Student Study Plans - is the heart of the site where all the student activities and tests are found. The order of topics found in the study plan may be customized for each individual student. If desired, MyReadingLab can generate a personalized study plan for each student based on his or her diagnostic test results, and the study plan links directly to interactive, tutorial exercises for topics the student hasn't yet mastered. Students can establish mastery in reading skills and reading level with these personalized study plans.
- Student Gradebook - Students can track and store all thier exercises and tests results, for review purposes. The student gradebook provides two reports: Student Detail report shows students scores on all of the exercises in this course. It also shows which topics they have mastered. Diagnostic Detail report shows students scores on each of the diagnostic tests in the course.
- Website design created uniquely for and tested by developmental students makes MyReadingLab easy to navigate and learn from. For example, questions are delivered one at a time so students can easily refer back to the reading on the same page as the question. Also, a Hompage gives students and instructors a quick snap shot of progress in the program. To learn more – go to the demo site!
- Pearson Tutor Services, (powered by SmarThinking). Offering students full time support in their writing efforts, SmarThinking is an online tutoring service that provides students with paper review 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Consistently given high ratings by students, faculty, and administrators for the quality of their service, SmarThinking employs hundreds of qualified writing tutors in the United States - all tutors have teaching and tutoring experience, and over 80% hold master's degrees or PhDs. Students who are registered for MyCompLab, MyWritingLab, MyTechCommLab or MyLiteratureLab can submit a specified number of papers for review directly from their MyLab site. Detailed feedback will be returned to the student within 24 hours.
- Lexile Reading Level Measurement - Reading level diagnostic allows instructors to access a dependable reading level, mesurement, called a Lexile developed by MetaMetrics that can accurately assess students' reading level and provide practice to help them improve. Once a reading level is established through diagnostic testing, students are assigned a level (in the form of a Lexile number) and then offered a unique set of exercises designed to help them improve their reading level through practice, so instructors and students can monitor reading level progress throughout the course. For more information on Lexiles and MetaMetrics is visit www.Lexile.com.
- Comprehensive Gradebook Tracking - Instructors can manage online homework, in-class activities, or lab assignments with quizzes and tests that are automatically graded, allowing instructors to spend less time preparing assignments and grading -- and more time teaching. Gradebook reports allow instructors to monitor an individual student's progress or the performance of an entire class. Alerts are generated for instructors when students have not achieved mastery in a skill after extensive practice, if student reading level is below an established benchmark, or if a student has not completed work in the program. Time on Task reports how much time a student has spent completing a specific exercise.
- Online course content management tools - MyReadingLab courses are filled with a wealth of content for student practice with reading skill and reading level. Everything instructors need to deliver a complete online course is there when they adopt a MyReadingLab course, but they can easily add or remove existing content. Instructors can also customize the look and feel of the MyReadingLab course, including deciding which content areas to make available to students and in what order. Instructors can also establish their own mastery level for individual exercise sets.
- Copy or link courses - Instructors can copy existing courses and preserve all customizations. They can also let other instructors copy thier course. To coordinate across multiple sections of the same course, instructors can set up a course link, where assignments in the "coordinator" course automatically appear in the affiliated "member" courses. This option is ideal for departments that want to maintain a standardized syllabus across multiple sections taught by different instructors.
- Trusted Content - All content in MyReadingLab has been written by active reading professionals teaching at the college level. Corrine Fennessey, Academic Advisor to MyReadingLab, vets all content written by our contributors across the country. Personalized Practice exercises that enable students to improve their reading skills and raise their reading levels.
Gradebook Reports that allow instructors to view different snapshots of student and class progress.
5 REASONS TO CHANGE TO THE NEW MY READINGLAB
Improved Diagnostic Testing
MyReadingLab employs diagnostic testing to assess students’ reading skills and reading levels. Based on their diagnostic test results, each student receives a personalized study plan to show them where they have achieved mastery and where they need more practice.
MyReadingLab’s reading level diagnostic tests were developed by MetaMetrics, best known for The Lexile Framework® for Reading (www.Lexile.com), a widely adopted method to measure reader
ability and text difficulty.
Improved Reading Skills and New Reading Level
MyReadingLab now offers improved Reading Skills and new Reading Level practice and testing.
Reading Skills (formerly Reading Road Trip) Thoroughly revised and redesigned Reading Skills Assessment and Practice:
- New questions have been written for each location, including new open ended questions
- A new bank of combined skills exercises and tests.
- All the question sets have been reorganized so students can truly achieve mastery in each skill area.
- Time on Task provides instructors the ability to identifyhow much time a student has spent completing a specific exercise
Reading Level (brand new)Instructors and students will now have access to a new program that can accurately assess student reading level and provide practice to help them improve. Once their reading level is established through diagnostic testing, students are offered a customized set of exercises designed to help them improve their reading level through practice and testing. Now, in addition to building discreet reading skills, students can also monitor reading level progress throughout the course using the Lexile measurement system.
More Personalized Practice
MyReadingLab offers diagnostic pretests for both the Reading Skills section and the Reading Level section. If the instructor chooses to assign the pretests at the start of the course, then students receive unique, personalized study plans.
Reading Skills Study Plan will order the topics so students tackle skills they need the most help with first. These skills activities are poweredby the best-selling multimediatutorial Reading Road Trip.
Reading Level Study Plan assigns readings specific to the student’s reading level. The program contains over 100 readings but the student is assigned only the readings that are appropriate for his or her reading level or Lexile measure.
Better Gradebook Reports
MyReadingLab provides four robust Instructor Gradebook reports that
enables instructors to view snapshots of student and class progress. The different Gradebooks offer diagnostic test results for each individual student, as well as for the class as a whole, allowing instructors to adjust their lesson plans to complement actual class performance.
Additionally, now students can view their own progress in the Student Gradebook.

Reviewers reactions to the "Road Trip" theme of MyReadingLab: Reviews - spring 2007
Barb Sussman-Miami Dade College-Kendall: The premise of MyReadingLab in terms of geographical content is excellent for our students.
Betty Black-Texas A&M-Kingsville: Having the [reading] skills exercises organized according to geographic locations is a good idea. Most of our students have not had the opportunity to travel much beyond their home towns. This introduces diverse lifestyles that they do not encounter much.
Julie Voss-Front Range C.C.: I also like the idea that the topics in Geography are academically rigorous and indicative of what they will see in their transfer level classes. Students at this level need to be challenged, and I think these readings will both interest and challenge them, and at the very least give them exposure to complicated academic text.
Karla Nast-Cy-Fair College: The common theme is interesting and the readings are engaging. The immediate feedback on the practice questions makes the reading exercises fun and motivating.
Reviewers reactions to the Reading Skills section
Julie Voss-Front Range C.C.:You covered all of the important skills to be covered in an advanced reading class. You have very good explanations in your “overviews and models” section… You have provided excellent coverage on the topics you have
Betty Black-Texas A&M-Kingsville: I think the Overviews and Models are very good. They explain what the students will encounter when doing the exercises. I do feel they should be required, not optional.
Carrie Phyrr - Austin CC: I like the Model and Overview sections very much. If a student is working the section before or during our class study on the subject, it gives them beneficial information about the skill. Both of these sections are very well done.
Julie Voss-Front Range C.C.:I was very impressed with your explanations in the overviews and models. In general, the topics were very well covered and I particularly liked how you so often drew analogies to topics that were familiar to students
Karla Nast-Cy-Fair College: The Overviews and Models are excellent. I like how the information is concise and yet the instruction is very helpful. This aspect of MRL is a definite strength of the program.
Reviewers reactions to the Reading Level section
Betty Black-Texas A&M-Kingsville:I think the reading selections are inviting and interesting. Most are expository text. This is good since most reading our students will encounter during their university career is informational. Most of our students have a difficult time reading expository text without a specific strategy. Since students will experience a variety of situations, it is an excellent idea to use a variety of topics and genres in their reading experiences.
Chae Sweet - Hudson County CC: I read many of the readings (I also read the readings in the developing stages of the MRL content), and found them interesting, topical and informative. There was also a great variety of topics and fields from which they were drawn. All of this offers students a wide range of possible readings to fit most any type of student.
Karla Nast-Cy-Fair College: The readings are definitely high-interest selections. The topics are diverse and there is sure to be a selection that every student will enjoy reading. It is a unique feature that students can select the topic of choice and go on to complete the diagnostic and exercises.
Betty Black-Texas A&M-Kingsville: I think the following passages will be of interest to our students. “An Ocean without Sharks” is a great passage for our students. We live right on the beach, so it is a passage they can relate to personal experience. The “Overcoming Shyness…” passage is great. A lot of our students come to college not knowing anyone and this passage might give them some incite to overcome this problem. Another interesting exercise was the “Wedding Cakes…”. Many of our students are engaged and this might be appealing to them. You have included a variety of topics that will interest our students.
Karla Nast-Cy-Fair College: My students favor articles about history and current events. The biography of Cassius Clay and the Zeppelin story would be great stories to direct students to.

Brief Description
Instructors, request access to MyReadingLab at http://vig.prenhall.com/catalog/aiv/customerType?catalog_code=myreadinglab-ph.
