The authors guide the reader in selecting items for the portfolio, how to compile/construct/label it, and how to talk about it/present it.

- Describes and gives ideas for the step-by-step process of developing, self-evaluating, and presenting a professional early childhood education portfolio. (See pg. v.).
- Unlike other books, this book shows how to present the portfolio as a benchmark for completion of a teacher ed program and how to present it and respond to interview questions when securing employment. Truly shows preservice Early Childhood teachers how to prepare sections of a professional portfolio, evaluate it, and present it to a future employer. (Ex. pg. 102-103).
- Emphasizes the stages of portfolio development (rather than portfolio types) outlining detailed steps, examples of specific pages, checklists, and self-evaluation rubrics, includes written examples of reflective narratives and how they relate to the student's educational philosophy, and shows how to use INTASC, NAEYC, or other standards as a framework for organizing artifacts.
