This book is a tool to assist educators working with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students in the challenging task of delivering practical, student-centered assessment and instruction based on recommendations from research in developmental and constructivist perspectives. This approach is referred to throughout the book as the “Ethnic Educator” perspective in order to emphasize how educators must be responsive to the needs of CLD students and their families in order to provide effective assessment and instruction.

This book attempts to integrate research and practice in the areas of bilingual and multicultural education, bilingual special education, and developmental and educational psychology.

  • Book is divided into two parts:
    • 1. The first part promotes in the reader an understanding of CLD students' idiosyncratic needs and cultural and linguistic characteristics by discussing sociopolitical and legal aspects.

    • 2. The second part relates to appropriate assessment and educational models and practices for CLD students by highlighting qualitative assessments and educational programs based on developmental, constructivist, “Ethnic Educator” perspectives.
