This anthology is comprised of two major components: thirteen autobiographical essays written by persons with learning disabilities and five analytical chapters written by education and psychology scholars.
Speaking in terms alternately intimate and analytical, autobiographical essays tell of sustained personal encounters with the challenges and mysteries of living with a learning disability. These full-length autobiographies are not merely personal, concerned solely with their writers' private lives; rather, they are also consciously analytical, offering astute, critical readings of culture and society.
The essays are written by noted educators and psychologists. Although keyed to the autobiographies appearing earlier in the book, these scholarly essays stand on their own as lucid and original contributions to the literature on learning disabilities.
- Full-length autobiographical essays written by persons with learning disabilities are carefully told portraits of the inner worlds and life-experience of persons who have grown up with learning disabilities.
- Scholarly essays answer and/or make dialogue with the autobiographies and offer important, original perspectives on best practices for educators, special educators, and psychologists.
- A chapter by Lisa Delpit (author of Skin-Deep Learning ) focuses on the social justice and diversity issues that emerge when persons with learning disabilities also happen to be racial minorities (Ch. 14).
- A chapter by Harvard psychologist Robert Kegan focuses on how learning disabilities may impact the development of selfhood (Ch. 17).
- A chapter by Harold McGrady, Janet Lerner, and Mary Lynn Boscardin (authors of The Educational Lives of Young Adults with Learning Disabilities ) is designed for special and general educators, administrators, and parents. This chapter models a reflective approach to determining which instructional practices are likely to benefit students with learning disabilities (Ch. 16).
