This non-traditional text familiarizes students with the scientific approach to the study of human development, while exploring the chronology of a typical lifespan text.

In evaluating contemporary research literature on human development, students are guided to critically assess assertions about behavior. Students see the field of human development as it is today, through 32 separate research “stories”, which tell why the study was done, what was done, and what the results tell us about development. This text--with its detailed Instructor's Manual-- is a complete teaching package permitting first-time instructors to employ a directive, Socratic teaching method, or for experienced professors who have grown tired of a traditional lecture approach. This text is also an effective bridge, preparing students for more difficult journal articles.

  • Scientific studies, representing the cutting edge of current developmental research, have been rewritten for consumption by beginning students.
  • Concepts and theories of life span development are introduced gradually, in the same chapter as the contemporary research, showing students the current interest in these theories.
  • Graphs, charts, and tables like those found in the contemporary scientific literature support the readings and appeal particularly to visual learners.
  • A Critical Thinking Toolkit is built over the chapters (found at the end of each chapter) and encourages student evaluation. These “tools” can be used to evaluate each chapter as the student proceeds through the book and can also be used in other research findings encountered beyond the course.
  • The Instructor's Manual contains all instructions and materials required for inquiry-based Socratic teaching of class, as well as a Test Bank. This is particularly useful for first-time instructors or for more experienced instructors who are seeking a change from the traditional lecture approach.
