This item has been replaced by Marriages, Families, and Intimate Relationships: A Practical Introduction, 2/E .

This book provides timely, practical, and high-interest information about marriages, families, and intimate relationships, in an engaging format that is easy-to-use and learn from.

  • A unique format and pedagogical plan make this book easy to read, review, and learn from:
    • "Major Questions" corresponding to the main chapter sections begin each chapter, provoking students to think and motivating them to learn.
    • "On the Web" directs students to a Website where they will get a close-up look at one of the topics discussed in the chapter, encouraging them to think and talk about this topic right away.
    • "What’s Ahead in this Chapter" provides an overview of the material to come in the chapter, while Previews serve the same purpose for major chapter sections.
    • The contemporary, magazine-like layout visually organizes material so it is easy for students to see entire concepts at one time.
    • Each major topic is organized into easily-manageable units of study, chunking texts into smaller sections and making innovative use of photographs and other graphics.
  • "Popular Culture and the Media" boxes help students separate fact from myth by showing examples of messages (often false or misleading) that we receive from the mass media about marriage and intimate relationships.
  • "Practical Action" boxes provide concrete advice that students will find beneficial in their personal and work lives.
  • "Numbers that Matter" boxes in each chapter provide statistics that will stimulate class discussion and help students focus on important data on race, ethnicity, gender, and age as this relates to marriages, families and intimate relationships.
  • Self Assessments enable students to discover how they feel about the chapter topic and help students see that relationships and family life are skills and processes, rather than something that just “happens” to them.
  • Special Supplements:
    • RELATE and READY—RELATE and READY are comprehensive self-assessment inventories developed by a team of marriage and family professionals and researchers. RELATE is for those who are married, living together, or in a serious dating relationship. READY is for anyone who wants to learn more about how prepared he or she is to enter into a serious relationship. Either inventory can be completed online at the same Website; students who complete one or the other instantly receive an extensive report analyzing their responses.   Available to students at a special discounted price when the RELATE and READY User Guide is packaged upon request with this text.
    • Marriage and Family Classroom Video—This exclusive video is available only from Allyn & Bacon, and records the experiences of real students.   Topics include pregnancy/labor/birth, parenting, dating, cohabitation, contemplating marriage, single parenting, and divorce.
    • Video Workshop for Marriage and Family—VideoWorkshop is a supplement that brings marriage and family concepts to life with high quality video footage, on an easy-to-use CD-ROM. The VideoWorkshop CD-ROM contains to same footage as the Marriage and Family Classroom Video. Each video segment is paired with a set of observation questions and activities in the accompanying Student Guide. The VideoWorkshop Student Guide With CD-ROM is packaged free on request with this text. The Instructor Guide With CD-ROM includes the complete contents of the Student Guide, plus an overview of each video segment, and teaching suggestions
    • The Instructor’s Manual includes sections on Teaching Marriage and Family to a Diverse Audience, Teaching with Video, and a guide to using the RELATE and READY self-assessments in the classroom.

Pedagogy

With my students in mind, I really appreciated clarity of key concepts and topics.  This also makes it easy to re-read the chapter before the test.  The learning lab also is a great help, and information on internet sites is up to date with current ways of doing research and learning.

Annette Schonder

Orange Coast College

The William’s text is wonderfully reader friendly in that it is written in a style that draws the reader in and invites learning. The layout is easy on the eyes with many helpful headings announcing to the reader the more important concepts.

I highly value the practical advice offered to the reader; it makes learning useful.

Dr. Kenneth Smylie

Santa Fe Community College

"One of the best things about it is the way it’s organized and broken into small sections.  I like the “questions for thought” at the beginning of each section of each chapter.  Also, the “preview” helps focus the reader’s thoughts on the topic. This would be an excellent text for an introductory “marriage & family” or “intimate relationships” course. "

Joy Jacobs

Michigan State University

My favorite part of the chapter was the opening vignette. It immediately caught my attention and made me want to read on. It provides a real life scenario that provokes students to think and motivates them to dive into the chapter.

Writing Style

To me, the writing style in the Williams, Sawyer & Wahlstrom text is personalized and the study of marriage and family is brought to life through relevance to everyday life. Indeed, reading the text is very much like having a conversation with an enthusiastic sociologist.

Diversity

Because of the internationalization [at my school], I also greatly appreciate the information that was included on other cultures.

Design & Layout

I personally enjoyed not having page after page of written word without any other visual stimulation.  This makes reading interesting on another level.

Annette Schnoder

Orange Coast College

The layout design is very colorful.  I particularly liked the Self-Assessment tool at the end of the chapter and the Take It to the Net section.

Chapter 14. Uncoupling: Separation and Divorce

The chapter on Uncoupling was very interesting and organized.  The reader is assisted with color in the headers.  Also, a concise, to the point preview is provided before a new topic is tackled, and at the end of the chapter a good summary is provided....I felt that the chapter did not only teach the topic, but gave students information that will assist them in making better personal decisions regarding family and marriage.  I thought it was a nice touch to include a self-assessment on marital adjustment.   Lastly, it was pleasant and concise reading.

Annette Schonder

Orange Coast College

I read chapter 14 on uncoupling and found it extremely helpful in exploring the many reasons for the high divorce rate in the United States today.  It offered reasons that make sense. The insights and practical advice were useful and clear.
