This eloquently simple text provides a “cutting edge” philosophy for those dealing with the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare of individuals suffering from issues with chemical dependency.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Substance Abuse follows the D.E.C.L.A.R.E model of treatment—a model in which each letter represents one of the seven bio-psychosocial modalities, or points of entry, for viewing the problems of a dependent client. This model takes the student through every phase of the acronym, which employs a therapeutic approach aimed at facilitating the improvement of drug-abusing behavior.

Throughout the text, the student is provided with helpful suggestions regarding treatment impasses, assessing strengths and weaknesses, developing a treatment plan, and prioritizing intervention strategies. Transcripts from actual sessions and case vignettes provide rich clinical material. Also, the student/clinician is provided with actual clinical instruments, not seen in other texts, to conduct assessment evaluations of clients.

  • Provides a model of chemical dependency, built upon in every chapter, that students can use to see the process of assessing, diagnosing and treating individuals with chemical dependency.
  • Contains a model approach for handling and managing denial in treatment, giving students a simple and effective tool to remember and use in therapy sessions (Ch. 3).
  • Provides students with the tools for a complete evaluation of a chemically dependent individual, giving them a “cutting edge” model for conceptualizing chemical dependency assessment and treatment (Introduction & Chs. 1-4).
  • Presents a unique procedure to assist students in refining his or her interviewing skills with a population of chemically dependent individuals (Ch. 3).
  • Features a model for dealing with the issues of recovery and aftercare, to most appropriately prepare students to assist the client with such matters (Ch. 5).
  • CONVENIENT SUPPLEMENT FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE OR INTERNSHIP USE WITH CLIENTS. Convenient, 3-hole punched clinical Assessment Instruments booklet, used to conduct assessment evaluations of clients, is available as a free supplement! This booklet includes the Historical Questionnaire, the Multifaceted Assessment of Chemical Dependency, and the Biphasic Analysis Reintegation Sequence.

Epilogue: The Journey...

Backcover Copy: (0205404405 / 0440Y) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ “I found the D.E.C.L.A.R.E. approach to treating chemically dependent individuals most interesting...the author has compiled a most impressive assessment-treatment format. The book is filled with very insightful diagnostic leads and compelling techniques and represents a broad-based repertoire of methods that address many aspects of human functioning and the treatment of substance abuse.”
