Human Communication in Everyday Life introduces students to the basic concepts in human communication and demonstrates how they can be used in a variety of communicative contexts. Built on a social-scientific approach, Human Communication in Everyday Life focuses on research that has come to light within the field in the last 30 years. The first part of this book is dedicated to introducing the basic concepts involved in the study of human communication while the second half explores the application of these concepts. Each chapter is filled with current research and pop-culture examples designed to help make the textbook reader-friendly and informative. Many of the chapters also include Research Measures that students can fill out to help gauge their own communicative behaviors on a personal level.

  • The first half of the book is designed to help students learn the basic terminology used in the communication field. These opening chapters will teach students the vocabulary and factual background that will prepare them to competently discuss communication while also preparing them for study in advanced communication courses.
  • The second half of the textbook allows students to see how the understanding of communication they gained in the first chapters can be seen in the real world in a variety of communicative contexts. This part of the book is vital to students, allowing them to make connections between the world they live in and the study of communication.
  • The book contains 43 Research Measures that have been utilized in communication research. Students can fill out the Research Measures to learn more about their personal communicative behaviors, thus enabling them to apply the content to their own lives.
  • Each chapter ends with a series of discussion questions that will help students think about the content and actively apply the information in ways not directly discussed within the chapters.
  • Objectives at the beginning of each chapter allow students to focus on the content that is most important within each section.
  • A focus on the social scientific perspective of human communication allows students to see communication through one complete worldview.
  • MyCommunicationKit is an electronic supplement that offers book-specific learning objectives, chapter summaries, flashcards and practice tests as well as video clips and activities to aid student learning and comprehension. Also included in MyCommunicationKit are Research Navigator and live weblinks, both of which provide assistance with and access to powerful and reliable research material.
