Counseling Strategies that Work targets the unique, day-to-day problems encountered by today’s school counselor and provides a new perspective on treatment selection.

This text is an anthology of intervention strategies are rooted in scientific evidence that supports their effectiveness when applied to the day-to-day “problems” confronting today’s school counselor. It is an excellent resource for counseling techniques courses or field placement experiences, as well as a useful reference for those currently employed as school counselors. Every chapter provides a blend of theory, practice and guided, personalized application. The content is presented succinctly, beginning with a brief introduction to the nature of the problems being addressed before delving into a detailed discussion accompanied by a case illustrating how to apply the intervention strategy.

Each chapter includes:

  • A brief introduction to the nature of the problems being addressed.
  • Precis of sample research supporting a specific intervention technique.
  • Detailed presentation with case illustration of how to apply the intervention strategy.
  • A listing of clinical recommendations for direct application.
  • A list of Web-based and literature-based resources of additional material.

  • Each chapter provides a brief, yet detailed description of the problem being addressed, including when appropriate, DSM diagnostic characteristics. This familiarizes students with various profiles helping them more readily identify persons at risk as well as those needing intervention.
  • Precis of sample research supporting a specific intervention technique.  Rather than simply citing research in support of a theory, each chapter provides a minimum of three sample interventions, supported by the literature, giving students insight into the specific “how to” of the intervention process.
  • Every chapter presents a detailed discussion, with case illustrations, of how to apply an intervention strategy, providing the students with a step-by-step approach to the implementation of an intervention plan.
  • Every chapter includes a listing of clinical recommendations for direct application.  The student is able  to get a 'feel' for the various creative and effective techniques employed by their colleagues in the field as well as begin to develop a respect for the need to monitor their practice.
  • A list in every chapter of Web-based and literature-based additional resources allows students to further develop specific knowledge and skills within a particular area of concern or treatment approach.
