The Teacher's Guide to Success: Teaching Effectively in Today's Classrooms is a quick and easy reference to support teachers at all grade levels, but particularly teachers experiencing their first years in the classroom.

The dynamic Dr. Ellen Kronowitz offers a realistic view of today’s classrooms and presents a very practical approach to preparing to teach. Pre-service and in-service teachers alike are provided tried and true experienced-based suggestions and research-based strategies and solutions to meet classroom challenges. Organized by 8 topical units that address common, overriding concerns in the classroom, teachers are taken from the first day to the end of the school year. Each of the brief chapters within each unit simplifies the complex challenges teachers face including: having a successful first day, organizing the classroom with proven routines and procedures, disciplining students in a respectful and positive manner, mapping out a differentiated curriculum, teaching with proven research-based strategies, assessing student learning, working with parents, preparing students for standardized tests, addressing the personal and professional needs of teachers, and much more. Paired with a powerful DVD that comes with every book, readers are provided with tips from leading authorities in education, examples from live classrooms, and printable resources ready for immediate use in the classroom.

In addition to the practitioners themselves, The Teacher's Guide to Success is appropriate for supervisors, administrators, curriculum coordinators, mentor teachers, in-service support providers, university methods course professors, and student teaching seminar leaders alike. All will find that this handbook facilitates their work with pre- and in-service teachers.

  • Based on her years of experience as a classroom teacher and working with future teachers at California State-San Bernardino, Dr. Kronowitz writes with a style that leaves all teachers feeling as though she is in the classroom with them.
  • “Effectiveness Essentials” at the beginning of every chapter provides the reader with a preview of the discussion to follow.
  • “Watch It!” callouts throughout the text refer readers to video clips from MyLabSchool that allow the written word to come to life as actual teachers and students demonstrate concepts and techniques in real-life classrooms. Students can apply the material in post-viewing prompts and questions.
  • “Apply It!” features encourage readers to apply and adapt concepts and strategies to their own situations.
  • “Avoid It!” alerts throughout each chapter inform readers of potential pitfalls and drawbacks of certain practices.
  • “Teacher Talks…and Student Says…” features present anecdotes or guidance from current teachers and student perspectives throughout the text, as relevant to the text material.
  • “Myth Buster!” features take common perceptions and misconceptions about teaching and explores their realities.
  • “Classroom Artifacts” features at various points in the book provide sample lessons that incorporate concepts and techniques presented in the book.
  • Helpful Unit Checklists summarize key points made in each unit and provide pre- and in-service teachers with a ready-made list of reminders of key elements that will help make their teaching days efficient and effective.
  • Suggested readings and websites at the end of every unit point students to additional key resources to glean more information.
  • As a quick-guide for daily practices, the unique layout of the book and space allowed for personal notes encourages users of the book to use it on a daily basis in the classroom.
  • Technology Advantage: A robust DVD that comes with every book introduces the reader to the author and her philosophy of education and provides teachers with extensive resources that will assist teachers in the classroom and with their professional development.
