Curriculum Webs helps in-service teachers, curriculum developers, and pre-service teachers build and use the World Wide Web as a central resource to facilitate learning.

A Curriculum Web is a web page or web site designed to support a unit of curriculum. This text describes the process of building Curriculum Webs from the early planning stages through design of the web pages, using the finished product in classrooms, reflecting on the results, and revising for further use. Readers will see how successful web-based curricula can be developed based on the stages of curriculum development and the needs of learners.

On the Companion Web site (curriculumwebs.com),Hands-On Lessons for various web editing software show specific procedures for implementing the ideas contained in the book. The Companion Web site also includes numerous links to resources and further examples.

  • Step-by-step procedures for completing the tasks discussed in the text in three major software packages: Dreamweaver, FrontPage, and Composer. These Hands-On Lessons take the reader through the entire process of building a Web site to support teaching and learning.
  • Four fully developed curriculum Webs, referred to throughout the text, show how the pieces of a curriculum web fit together and explain different methods of building the curriculum plan and the web site to support it.
  • Throughout the text, curriculum webs developed by practicing teachers provide concrete examples that show the application of the principles and procedures discussed in the text.
  • Special features such as “Chapter Overviews,” “Your Next Step,” Question(s) for Reflection, “For Further Learning,” an extensive Glossary, and an online HTML references provide readers with additional resources for building and using webs.

  • A new chapter (Ch.2) provides an overview of the process of building curriculum webs from start to finish and compares curriculum webs to WebQuests and other activity formats to provide context for teachers who may not know the range of available technology.
  • The chapters have been re-ordered to more closely reflect the steps for building a curriculum web.
  • More extensive coverage of Cascading Style Sheets, streaming audio and video, and Flash has been developed to reflect current trends in the field.
  • The pedagogy has been extended to include:
      • New Questions for Reflection in each chapter that promote deep thinking about the use of curriculum webs to improve teaching and learning.
      • Additional activities to provide more step-by-step guidance in the building of curriculum webs.
      • Numerous new examples and resources.
      • New and more extensive bibliography.
      • Expanded glossary.
  • The Companion Web site (www.curriculumwebs.com) provides up-to-date links and further information on all the topics in the text and is referenced throughout the text.
