This text demonstrates successful ways in which English language learners have excelled in an arts-based methods program.

Based on the workings of an award-winning, and well-researched program called SUAVE (Socios Unidos para Artes Via Educación - United Community for Arts in Education), this text delves into all aspects of classroom practice, as well as the professional development practices that support students' learning through the arts-based methods.

Through the voices of teachers, researchers, artists, administrators, and students, the successful journey of learning through the arts in ESL and bilingual classrooms comes to life in meaningful and significant ways. The stories combine first-hand accounts with researchers' analysis, providing a unique balance of practice and reflection.

  • A perfect supplement for any ESL course, this text is about ongoing practice, and all of the examples are from real classrooms.
  • Each chapter is written from a different perspective (first hand accounts)—teachers, artists, administrators, and researchers—to provide different views of how this approach is successful.
  • Students' voices are included throughout the book, giving readers an authentic exposure to the primary audience for ESL teaching.
  • Each chapter includes examples and stories from actual K-8 classrooms to give students a glimpse into the real classroom.
  • Offers multiple hands-on examples of curriculum, which can be easily applied to the students' own classrooms or setting.
  • A wealth of examples of teaching the content areas—Science, Math, Social Studies, and Language Arts—through the arts.
  • In-depth discussion of the need to support professional development for those teaching English language learners.

This is an inspiring and encouraging book for all teachers, not just those teaching ESL and/or elementary...This is an excellent asset for practicing teachers, student teachers, parents and administrators...This is the kind of book readers would not want to put down until they have reached the end.”
